Question on "base timing"

Adjusted timing to 15 degrees earlier this week on 91 GLE. Used Chilton manual which made no mention of disconnecting anything (TPS) before adjusting. Threads on subject suggest different.

Anyone know if anything has to be disconnected to set timing.

thanks.

Re: Question on "base timing"

In other nissans the FSM states that the TPS should be unplugged and then the engine needs to be raced above 3k rpm 3 times. This locks in the base timing/idle settings so they can be changed. My Z32 and sentra FSM both say this, so I know the maxima has to be the same way.

??? You mean '91 GXE? Also, 15 degrees IS the stock timing as far as I know.

Perhaps on the VE, but not the VG30E for 89-94's. I have the 91 SE service manual and there is no mention of unplugging a TPS and revving. I also have a basic repair manual printed by Nissan and it lays out the detailed procedure for setting the timing, including pictures. There is absolutely NO MENTION of having to unplug a TPS, etc. I've never done it on both of my Maximas 91's I've owned.

Ari has read this procedure for his older 87 VG he had - for one reason or another, that does not apply to us. I have checked and re-checked my timing after performing the procedure and it's dead set.
