axle removal

I need to replace the driver side axle and per the service manual you only need to remove the tie rod end and the caliper, along with the axle nut of course.

Has anybody been successful doing it this way? Is there enough clearance to remove the axle from the hub this way?

I've seen where some people have also removed the three ball joint nuts in order to gain more movement for the strut assy.

I want to keep this as simple as possible! I couldn't find a specific thread on this using search.

Thanks,
Tim

I recommend removing the three ball joint nuts, it makes the job much easier and is trivial to do. Also, you'll find that the spindle shaft is easy to slide out of the hub if the steering is turned to the extreme anti-clockwise or clockwise lock position. If you have an automatic transmission, make sure you don't operate the engine/transmission with the axle shaft removed.

I did both of mine about 3 weeks ago. ON the drivers side....I couldn't get thestrut bolts out, so I just took out the 3ball join nuts. Plenty of clearance and will save you alot of trouble jus trying to unbolt all that you can. Make sur you have bucket under the tranny where it slids out....unless yu want tranny fluid all over your garage like I did Overall it was an easy job and savedmy about 300 bucks doing it myself.

Yup.. very simple. just remove the three ball joint nuts and the axle nut. nothing else required (other than draining the tranny fluid).

speaking of axles, i still can't seem to get my passenger side axle in all of the way. i have a manual 90 se. i read somewhere on here to oil the end of it a little bit and hammer it in... i did that a lot and it still wouldn't go it all of the way. it touches that 3-bolt mount thing before going all of the way in the tranny. anyone know what else to do?

you Hammer it buy pulling the CV and pushing it (stretching the boost then compressing it).. by that you create a "self hammer" and you`ll knock the cv back in properly..

Once you gain clearance, should the axle simply pull out?... Mines not ...

On my '92 SE w/auto and no-ABS, I had to pry the driver's side to remove it. It's been a while but I seem to recall there is a circlip that you have to overcome. I used a big screw driver as a pry bar to pop it loose. The passenger side was much easier (((except for seating the replacement transmission seal, until I discovered I could use a long wooden dowel (36") and hammer to tap it into place. Without the dowel I was having trouble with accessibility. The dowel allowed me to swing the hammer from beside the car rather than under it.)))

so I have to pull it out of the tranny?... can I disconnect it from the hub that the axle goes through (under the exhaust manifold?)...

thanks

The axle shaft has a splined shaft that mates with the transmission. You may want to visit an auto parts store to take a look at a replacement before ripping out your's. Make sure the CV joint on the replacement feels smooth and tight before taking it home. I had to reject a couple remanufactured units until I found one that met my requirements. Regardless of life-time warrantees, I'm not interested in unnecessary repeat repairs.

well, I'm in the middle of a complete front end rebuild... everything from the firewall forward is getting rebilt, or replaced. Axles, brakes, engine, trans, rotors, tie rod ends, ball joints, steering linkage, power steering pump, sway bar... EVERYTHING is getting replaced with new or used stuff, mostly new though... the max has 165K on it, so its much due. I'm doing all the labor myself, and I dont plan on having it aligned when I'm done. It has approx 60% of cheap rubber on it. I'll let you know when I finnish the project this weekend.

furious--

When you say it "sways" and "rides to the right":

1) Do you mean the car rocks back and forth as you are driving, both under acceleration and while coasting, like the suspension was too soft or there was a big cross-wind?

2) Do you mean the car wants to steer to the right when you let off the steering wheel, as if the alignment was off?

3) Or, does the car "pull" to the right when you step on the accelerator? How about when you let off the accelerator?

you don't want to tug on your axle! this can cause you're job to get 10x worse. use a large flathead or a prybar and pry it in between the axle and housing. good luck.

i am not to happy with how you have taken the max and not honored my wishes to work on it.
you did not do me or my family a favor and i wish now that I had given the car to Jeff92SE because he needs a good engine far more than you do.
for those who do not know what im talking about, maybe nismo will be so kind to enlighten you.

everyone good luck with theyre projects except one person, as you can already guess who.

This does not have anything to do with axle removal...

Uh guys? So far I have privately heard both stories from each side. Each were pretty unbiased. But I don't really want to get into the middle of this situation, nor do I want to have to read it in the forums. I can't really comment either way as both have good points.

But if you two guys have issues to work out, please handle them via PM, email, phone, letter, carrier pigeon, smoke signals, personal contact, hand signals, morse code, gunts and gestures but don't continue it on the forums.

Thanks.

You guys need to leave this subject off the forums. It does not involve anyone EXCEPT you two. If you're unhappy with something he did, take it up with him in person. meet him in a dark alley and let your fists do the talking or something, but DON'T slander people here. that job is left up to the moderators. ;-)
