What is that thing called in between the back two seats that folds down?

There is that thing in between the back two seats that you can pull down, some cars have it a cup holder, but on my max it doesn't really do anything. What is it for, and whats it called?
Can you take the backing out of it so you can see the trunk through it?

its an armrest
you can rest your arm on it

i think you can get to the trunk through it if you remove the cardboard back in the armrest and drop down the backing of the trunk.

It can be used as an armrest, it also allows objects such as skis
to be put in trunk and pass through the opening into the interior it exposes when it is down.

Ah, ok, thanks, that explains it. Alot better then the "head rest" idea...
Ok, I took out the cardboard backing(boy they were screwed in tight), but the insulator in the trunk, when on, blocks the trunk still. Also, there's some metal stuff poking up from the bottom.
But I have a question, the stuff that covers the trunk(the insulation), if I don't have it on the back seats, won't the car warm up quicker(I want it to be cool)?
