Rusted bolts please reply now
Hi Guys
I am headed to dealer now. Last week I checked the front left wheel bearing..
Unfortunately all the bolts and nuts (19 mm on Caliper, 17 mm on knuckle, 17 mm on Ball joint) are rusted badly...
Mine is 93 Max SE. I leave in Michigan..Lot of snow, heat. Do you guys also have same rusted bolts... ? It was really bad...
I am planning to replace all of them.. The dealer is saying around $20- 30 (total).. Is it reasonable or can I get them some where else or cheaper ?
Thanks

Great to see your reply..
Now did you mean $20-30 for all the bolts (approximate) is a rip off
or a good deal.. ?
Pardon my understanding...

i don't think that's a bad deal..that's assuming one wheel. better deal if it's a axle (front 2).
keep in mind labor rates are quite high at the dealer

That's not a bad price. When buying these types of bolts/nuts, there is usually a material requirement/hardness/strenght and all that associated with them. NOT your standard off the shelf hardware.
You'll probably be wise to buy the bolt plate (has 3 studs on it)for the ball joints also. If the nuts are that bad, they will more than likely twist the bolt off. About $11 each - one for each side.
Are you also buying the 2 bolts and caliper floating bolts(?) that the caliper actually moves on? They will also probably need replacement. Make sure the calipers slide freely.
I usually apply a small amount of anti-seize to all bolts and nuts due to the salt that is used on upsate NY roads in the winter. Helps a whole lot! Covering with a good undersealer also helps prevent/slow down the corrosion.
