Speedometer/odometer Questions

I have a 90 max with a digital dash. The same day that I blew the High-power steering hose and sprayed fluid all over, my speedometer and odometer quit. They worked sporadically at first, but now have quit completely. If it is the speed sensor, can someone help me out?
How do you go about verifying that it is the speed sensor itself. I have checked the wires and they seem to be ok (no bad ends or burnt wires).
Does it work magnetically or mechanically or optically ?
How much voltage should it output, etc.?
Any other suggestions of what to check and how to check?
My dealer says I need a new dash, but you guys have led me to believe that the speed sensor is the problem. I need the speedometer or it won't pass inspection. HELP.

Re: Speedometer/odometer Questions

I use to have a digital cluster but I changed it for an analoge, for a cuple of reasons, first reason was that the speedometer was showing two to five miles when the car was at a complete stop. I think it was a bad cluster, the oder reason I changed it is because you can buy the indiglo over lays for that type of aplication
