170k and first BIG problem (transmission?)

So I'm driving with my friends to the movies, get to the parking spot and put it in park. We all feel the car begin to have a VERY rough idle. I begin to worry and think, uh oh, I'm gonna have to pay $2k to get the tranny rebuilt.

And to make my fears worse I put it in reverse and the car barely goes and makes all kind of shrieking sounds. Have to give it more gas than usual to even just get it to move a little bit. All the time violently vibrating.

So we watch the movie and I'm feeling horrible all the way through watching my credit card bill rise. But I feel a little bit better because I find there's just about no problem when it's in drive. You think the problem could be small and maybe doesn't require a full rebuild? Anyone else have this problem before? *crosses fingers*

Oh yea, and we were supposed to take the Max to a weekend trip to NYC tommorrow. Just my luck.

Ehhh the car freaks on IRC think I'll need a full rebuild and are recommending selling my car and get a used 5spd. If you guys think this would be a better option the KBB value for a 92-94se 5spd is about $4k which isn't too bad.

But how much can I get for a 90 GXE with a screwed tranny? $1k from a junkyard? I also have those mods listed above in my sig. Should I take em off and sell on the org? The Y-pipe and CAI won't fit on a VE, but the custom catback should right?

Thanks for any help.

I think you're most likely jumping to conclusions. Take it in for an external diagnostic, most tranny shops do that for free. If they feel it needs to be inspected internally, then start rethinking the auto VG. Until then, you're jumping the gun. Often times things aren't as bad as they seem. (I'm still waiting for the phone call to find out just how screwed my tranny is, but don't assume the worst yet.)

Well the mechanic says I have to buy a new transmission. That'll run about $1500 new plus there's a problem with the rear brakes leaking. All together with labor the final est. cost is about $4,200. There's no way in hell I'm gonna pay that much for a car that's worth $2k from kbb.com.

He said I could also get an auto tranny used, but since it has no warranty he doesn't recommend it. I guess this is good bye to the Max, in perfectly good condition and everything else is in tip top shape. Even though it's over a decade old I still get comments on how nice it looks, with the outside totally stock.

This is great since I just put about $700 in performance mods over the summer.

oh and by the way, nismo1989 and THX whatever options u guys take, make sure you get a good warranty. Minimum should be 3years, maximum lifetime. If you're getting one from a junkyard, well, i honestly dont know what to tel you, because if it fails in 2months, well you're looking at the same price again; is it a risk worth taking? Labor is warranted for 30days too.

I'm getting a 5 year, 55K mi. warranty on all parts and labor. I still don't know how bad it's gonna hurt my wallet, but I will by this time tommorrow. Regardless, it's gonna be Thursday at the soonest before I'm back on the road.

Oh well, at least I'll get my baby back!

just call around and ask a bunch of transmission shops. i got mine rebuilt for $1500 with a 6 month warranty at a shop in the ghetto. at most it shouldn't be more than $2500 for the rebuild. brake work doesn't cost $1700. that's insane.

you should get a tranny cooler too and baby the thing if you get it rebuilt. good luck. then again, our cars are getting old and you may want to reconsider dropping a grand or two in a tranny that's not too good to begin with.

$4200 eh? Run far away from that repair shop and never, ever stop by that place again, even if your car's burning, and the shop's right in front of you. Even if you do have $4200 lying around, it'd be better to just junk your Max and get another car. A more honest mechanic would say "It'll cost you $4200 to fix it, and it isn't worth it, so just get another car." That is, if it really cost that much to fix the problem. I think a tranny rebuilt is much, much less.

Anyway you would have to be a lobotomy patient to spend that kind of money on that kind of car. The shop obviously don't think much about their customers, they just think of them as suckers with $$$. You ought to stay away from them just because they have such a low opinion of you!

Did you check the tranny fluid level???????
like nismo said you might be jumping to conclusions. That mechanics BLOWS. Change the tranny fluid, do a few drain and fills, you cannot get all of it out doing one drain and fill, so it needs to be done a couple times.

Also there are a lot of sensors on the tranny, so it could still be something else THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE TO REBUILD THE TRANNY.

I have to say that this forum STINKS when it comes to trannies, thats everyones best advice?? rebuilding the tranny

Read my thread about tranny woes. It's not the forum that stinks, it's the transmissions...

that's because the trannies are made by borg warner who just so happens to do a lot of domestic trannies... what are the chances of that.. hmm..
