Hi fellas, I have a beige '90 GXE and I have decided to do a couple cosmetic things. I changed the steering wheel to a z32 wheel. Now I want to paint the calipers and maybe the drums. I was thinking or maybe aluminum(silver) to match my 17" wheels or red. What color do you guys think compliments the beige max best??

I'm also a little confused about what paint to buy. On some sites they say to get high temp paint and clear coat, where as other sites say to get only engine enamel. Which is correct and how should I apply it??

Take care,
ICE

I would say black would be nice too. although silver would look nice but get dirty. I have a write up on my site if you want to look at it.

also hows the steering wheel look? I'd like to see pics of it. what did you do about cruise buttons? I put an SE wheel on mine.

My friend also said to paint them black. But why black??

The steering wheel came from a Z32 and I took the "Z" center cap off and replaced it with the "Nissan" cap from a 240SX. The 240SX also has the same exact wheel as the Z32. The wheel came with cruise control buttons. I love the Z32 wheel!! It's all leather, very thick, and feels hella better than stock. IMO, I think it looks a lot better than the 3rd gen SE wheel. The SE wheel looks kinda plan but I will agree that it is an improvement over the GXE wheel. I payed $53.25.

Take care,
ICE

PAINT THE DRUMS!!!! LOL, oh god dude, why? ok sorry, i have this thing with some cosmetic stuff, personally i wouldn't draw attention to the fact you have drums in the back, but i've always been partial to red calipers. ummm, as far as the drums, i'd try to paint em a color that doesn't stand out! like black, just my .02 though.

I would never paint my drums a color that would make them stand out. I first wanted to paint the calipers and drums silver to match my wheels. I think silver would make things subtle. Aren't calipers and drums silver(metal) when they are NEW?? So if I were to paint them silver, it would look stock, right? Would that be cool or too much rice?? If I were to use red paint, it would be only for the calipers. Red drums would look stupid.

Cmon fellas, help a brother out!

If all fails then black is cool.

Take care,
ICE

I think that there is no point in painting the calipers black. I'm pretty sure that most of them that I have ever seen are black stock. In my opinion there is no problem accenting the outside of the car by painting the calipers a color that sticks out. It makes your rims stick out more and the whole car looks a little nicer. All you guys gotta get off this topic about rice. It's not ricey for him to paint his calipers red. As far as I'm concerned you can hook up the exterior of a car as much as you want for it to look nice, and there is nothing wrong with that. It's just the fact that when people do that and have no engine mods its ricey. ICE could paint his calipers pink for all I care as long as he has some engine mods to go along with it. I would recomment a blue or red on that color car. When my car was gold I experimented with blue and it looked nice. I painted the drums too though just so they matched the calipers. Even though I dont like the fact that I have drums on the car, it's not like they arent already noticable with my 18" 5 spokes. Its all up to you ICE, some people are gonna tell you that its ricey to paint them anything but black. As long as it looks good I say then choose any color. I know that you care about performance too, so I wouldnt think that it would be ricey in any way.

Thanks Chris, Your right!! I'm not all show, but more of a go person. The reason I want to paint my calipers and drums is for the same reason you did. Because they are very visible through my 17" wheels. The rust and grim look is not in. I like the subtle look, so I think I will go with silver. Blue and red are cool, but the sight of red drums could burn my retinas, lol. Red looks sweet, but a little to flashy for me.

Thanks for the info.

Take care,
ICE

BTW Chris: since I don't remember you mentioning to me that you have NOS. Since when?? What set up do you have? Did you finish builting your engine?

Hey Ice I thought I told you on IM that I had NOS. Ive had it for a couple of months, but my tranny has been so screwed that I have only used it for like 2 bottles. I drop off my car tomorrow to do my 5-speed conversion. As far as the engine rebuild I decided that I'm going to do the VG30ET swap and raise the boost. That will be a summer project. I'm just gonna play aroung with my 5-speed till then and hook up a wet system. I'm getting rid of my fogger system so I can step up to like a 100 shot wet system. Good luck with your car man. I'll have pics of my car posted in a day or too. It's primer gray right now. Its sweeet! Nah, cant wait till I finish the metallic blue on it. It will give you guys an idea of what the car looks like for now though.

just thought you might want a few pics of what silver drums and calipers look like, since half the people whine and moan about the drums.. IMO, it's better than rust brown..
but then again, rear discs with silver calipers are even better!
Some of the pics are pretty large, so beware.

*DISCLAIMER* This is my opinion, of course.

I think painted calipers look nice, if done right. Mine on my '80 Celica are red, but I have bigger calipers, Supra rims and a bunch of other stuff done on the car. I think it adds a nice touch, and makes it look like I paid attention to my brakes (the x-drilled brembos help too) and it looks nice with everything else down there.

I think painted drums (any color other than satin black) look dumb. Don't draw attention to the fact that you have drum brakes. When painted black, they look fine.

My calipers on the Max by the way are bare metal, not black - like almost every other car I have owned. My '92 300ZX calipers (for my '85 Turbo) came wrinkle black. Very nice. I saw a C5 the other day with body color (calypso blue) caliper and good lord that looked stupid.

Hey Matt, Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate the pics. YOU SEE GUYS!!! Silver isn't a bad choice. Silver is so sutle that they are hardly noticable, very simple which is my style. I bought the paint and cleaner already, so tomorrow is play time. I also plan on rotating my tires, which is a plus.

Yo Matt, do you have any pics of your silver(aluminum) gauge pod?? I was thinking of painting the black cover white or silver due to the fact that I can't find a decent set of white face gauges her in Miami.

Take care,
ICE
