Best tire size for 17" rims?

Im getting new 17" rims for christmas and im going to buy tires for them teh first of the year but im having trouble deciding on a good tire size. I currently have 16" rims with 225/50/16 tires and i LOVE the width of the tire. I was thinking of going with 225/40/17 but was wondering if 40 is too low of a profile to go with or should i go with 215/45/17 tires? Any advice is greatly appriciated!

Oh and here is a pic of the rims im getting!

Thanks
-Mike

how wide are they? 225/45 or 235/45 should be fine depending on width

Ah both of your choices are too small to maintain the original OD of the 205-65-15 tire.

Re: Best tire size for 17" rims?

Ive got 17" Tantrums on Nitto 450s, the size is 225/45 and they work great, the diameter is a little smaller than stock so the speedo is off like 1-2%. but i think you would fit 235 or 245 depending on width of rim.

On a 17X7 rim I would go with a 215 or 225/50 series.

with 17x7... 225/45 is the closest u can get to your stock tire size without throwing the speedo too far off

Actually 235/45/17 is closer to the stock OD and its still a small percentage below the stock OD. What are you doing with the rims on your car now? I swear i've seen you around the Fredericksburg area before during the summer.

235 is too wide for a 7" rim

235 is fine for 8" and i have it on my 7.5" rim but on a 7" rim you would have just a wide bead of tire...i've seen it and it just doesn't look right
