maxima hestitating, what do y'all think?

it doesn't do it everytime i drive it but while riding down the road all of the sudden it will lose power for literally a second, gain power again, lose power and gain.......then it will be fine for a few more miles. does this sound like a fuel filter problem or something worse?

thanks guys

Hi,
I have a 1991 Max. The exact same thing happens to me. It is so frustrating. I have taken it to my mechanic who has changed plugs, timing belt, head gasket, EGR module all to no avail.
I am wondering if this is happening to more of us. It definitely isn't a fuel filter issue.

I would check your ignition coils. They are suppose to be replaced every 55K miles, I think is what the manual says. I've got 190k on mine that have never been replaced and my car will lose power for a few seconds like yours, but i'm replacing my engine soon so i'm not worrying about it now But definetly look at all of them. I changed my fuel filter thinking that was the problem, but it didn't do anything. I took my coils out and three out of six of the casings are cracked to hell. For a temporary fix, my boyfriend wrapped them in clear packaging and electrical tape and it bonded to the casings and it hasn't lost power since. It keeps it from grounding out and losing power. He's so smart, of course he is a rocket scientist! Hope that helps!

any other problems?

any other problems?, like.. bad gas/sulfer smell, very black exaust, black smoke from exaust?
-i dont think its the coils because i have 104k miles on my 90 max with factory coils, and they still work like new.
-im guessing the check enigne light does not come on so the ECU can't store any codes. It could be your O2 sensor, the ECU can't tell you if its good or bad, but when your O2 sensor dies black smoke/carbon/fuel will be dumping from the tailpipe, along with a large hesitation and power loss.

Okay, start over. What year/model Maxima? what transmission? How many miles? Give us a background here. About the only thing one can easily diagnose over the internet is a flat tire.

And Cheezer, you don't have coils on your Maxima. Ignition coils are on VEs. You have one coil that sends ignition power through your distributor, along your spark plug wires to your plugs.

first off, thanks for the responses

i'm taking it in tomorrow but to answer some questions it's a 93 SE auto with 110K. there is no black smoke coming from the tailpipe and there are no bad smells. i drove it approximately 20 miles today and it only hesitated once. the lady i bought it from didn't drive it much over the past 3-4 months. i put premium gas in it the first time i filled it up.

thanks for the interest.....this site is really good. i like it a lot better than newcelica.org

For a temporary fix, my boyfriend wrapped them in clear packaging and electrical
