I don't know if anyone's done this, or if it's even a good idea or not, but I don't think the tranny has ever been replaced/rebuilt on my 91' with 148k miles and I am starting to get paranoid... If mine were to go out could I get the tranny off a 89-94 Auto VG? Is there anyway to tell how good it would be? About how much money would you be looking at for the install of it?

not really...i thought about getting one used when mine died but i eventually found a place that would 'refurbish' mine for 1k so i went for that instead. That was with me installing it. its rediculous...a trannie used costs 2x as much as a used motor

One warning to you........

used is NOT the way to go!!!!!!! Rebuild is much safer and plus you get a warranty! with a used from a junkyard there is no garuntee that the transmission you're getting is "trouble-free" and plus with a rebuild you have more of a chance at a decent warranty!! mine came with a 2 year warranty and possibility of extension!!!(wooohoooo!!!) shoot for something like that, used is not highly suggested IMO!!!! install ran me about $500, but thats on the hookup at my old job!! look to spend anywhere form $700-1K like was previously said and throw in a auxiliary cooler for a good measure!!

I replaced my transmission at 145,000 miles. I got the used transmission from a Junk yard, courtesy of my mechanic. He knew his stuff. The transmission was about 400 bucks and the labor was about 450. My car, now close to 180,000 miles is still taking me to places.

Tranny

My automatic transmission rebuilt ran me 1,200$ with 6 month warranty. That was the cheapest price I found while looking around. Nissan gave me some outrageous quote at like 2,500$ or something.
Do not go for a used tranny, rebuilt tranny is better I would say, a new tranny would run probably over 3k.
Be very happy that your tranny is in such good shape at nearly 150k miles! wow. Mine died at 86k! Just take care of it, don't beat on it too much.

I believe in a rebuilt, the labor it self costs about 800$, because they have to take the tranny out and replace bands and stuff like that inside, then put it together and put it back in your car. The parts run about 200$ or so. You are mostly paying for labor, if you are mechanically inclined and could get the thing out your self, you can save a lot of $.

Be happy with your tranny! I WISH my 2nd tranny goes to 150k!

tranny

i just got the car during the summer, and I don't have any previous knowledge about if a new tranny was put in or not, but I am hoping it was!!! If not, I won't be too surprised when this goes at close to 150k. I think I would still just get a used tranny if mine goes because I only need the car for another 2 years to get me through HS and I would think a decent used would last me till then...and a 6 month waranty doens't sound too good! two years does tho, you can bet I'd do a neutral drop from redline 2 weeks before the warantty was over!

Re: Tranny

I don't understand why people wouldn't want to buy a used transmission. If it was taken out of a car that had a mileage of 80,000, I would save money and go with the used transmission. Since a third generation is old as is, gettting a used transmission a low mileage is good.
