Just bought 1992, Need help on spuddering problem...

Guys,

I just bought a 1992 Max SE, and it seems to lack power when it gets hot. Sometimes when it's hot and I start it, it has a miss in the timing? sort of a spuddering miss. I have replaced the plugs and found that there are coil packs not cap and rotor. I have an Altima and have been a member thee for a few years but I have a Max now too, soo hopefully I can get some cool tips from you guys and some help on trouble shooting this problem. Get back to me ASAP.

Look for cracks in the coils and check your plugs. Let us know what that turns up...

Once again, exhaust manifold stud breakage. My 92 SE did the SAME thing. Luckily, the broken stud was on the front of the engine. But its one heck of a project if its the rear.

Do a search on this problem, and see if it matches your description.

What I noticed:

Sputtering
Sounded like a big lawn mower
Big power loss
Stud snapped in half inside the head

If you discover that this is your problem, email me and I will help you further. I did all the work myself, and it runs great now.

could also be the fuel injectors. How many miles do you have on your car? If its near about 120k, then it's probably about time you change those.

I will be replacing the Knock Sensor, I have searched the threads and also got some input from other users from this site by AIM. I don't have any exaust leaks, so I will start with the KS and replace the timing belt while I am at it-

ACtually start by cleaning or replacing the red coolant temp sensor located right where the fuel rail starts. Also try cleaning your throttle body as well. Check EGR for correct operation. These things are alot cheaper than the KS and the gaskets needed to change it

Jeff, Jeff, Jeff.......

Throwing money at a problem is much more productive than actually fixing what's wrong.

Case in point: VQ coil packs on 99 to 2k1 Minimas. My approach, buy 1 pack and replace each one until defective one is replaced and no longer sets off the SES light. Nissan dealer's approach (only if under warranty, of course, and after passing **** exam): replace all 6 coil packs and move on to next customer.
