If you couldn't get another 3rd gen...

or if you had to upgrade to another car, which one would you get?

Personally I cannot stand the 4th gens... that whole bubble look of the ninety's didn't convince me at all. The new max's (5th gens) have grown on me, but I'm not about to plunk down 30k for a brand new car, I rather buy a home first.

Here are my choices: 1990 - 94 Infinity Q45. 1990 - 94 Lexus GS300. 1992 - 94 Acura Legend.
1990 - 94 BMW 500 series (highly unlikely though... Maintenance would be a female dog)

For me I'd have to have a manaul tranny, so your first two choices are gone.

Are we talking about the same $$?

Before I got my max I was looking at:
94/5 Integra GS-R 4-door
94? Passat GLX 5-speed
Legend GS 4-door 6-speed $$ in good condition

I would love to get an older M5 or 540, but insurance and maint. would be rather high. I guess if I had to get another car right now, I'd look for another VE 5-speed. There's really not much out there that meets my high standards and thin wallet.

I was thinking about a 4 door GSR too before I got my Max. Definetly one of the early to mid 90's those were the best VTEC's

WRX Wagon, silver, 5 spd, black wheels, ski's on top.

Or a new M5 with the Dinan 76HP upgrade. Yeah that.

What's really scary is that BMW can track how hard the car was driven...Sounds like Enemy of the State or something.

Cross me off the M5 list.

Porsche 911sc ($15-18k could get a fairly good one)
Porsche 944S
Porsche 944 ('89 - 2.7l i4)
Porsche 944 s2 (3.0l i4, damn they're big!)
Porsche 944 Turbo or Turbo S (one of the best bang for buck smaller sports cars)
Porsche 968 Coupe 6spd ONLY (tiptronic is cool but, gotta have the stick
E34 BMW 5 series
BMW 328is
BMW 750il (surprisingly cheap for a v12 sedan!)
Too many Audi's to think of (probably a '92-94 S4)
'94-96 Infinity Q45
Nissan 240sx '91-93 hatchback(s13 DOHC)
...................

Oh god the list could go on forever! I'm a die-hard Nissan/Datsun fanatic but, a Porsche 944 is the first car I'd consider if I couldn't get a Maxima. $3-6k can get you a pretty nice one and they have lots of potential. A 968 would barely be obtainable but, they are great value for the money as well (3.0l i4, 236hp, 225lb/ft torque, all for under $20k or even $15k if you look hard)

Definately...

A new SE-R!!! The Spec Vs are great with the helical LSD and 6speed gear... but since Im poor Id go with the base SE-R.

1000 pounds lighter than my max... + 4 doors... hey, its a winner!

Ditto, Sentra SE-R. If not that, then another year of Max.

I would really like a WRX Wagon. It must be a 5-spd. I love these cars.

I would have a 97 Cadillac DeVille. I almost had one but i couldn't afford the insurance on it and i decided that if i couldn't have my big luxury car then i would get then next best thing...a fast car with room. Plus i got my Max for less than half the cost of the Caddy. I love Maximas but i will aways be a Cadillac man at heart. But, when i get done with school, I will be looking at the new Infinity M45. Thats got my vote over anything Cadillac has out now.

Eh, I thought the topic title says "If you couldn't get another 3rd gen..." thus presumably cars that are about the same price as a 3rd gen Maxima. Now, if any of you know how to get a 3.5l Altima with Stillen kit for the same price as a 3rd gen, or Subaru WRX, or a 350Z, tell us please!

I think older BMWs are very appealing, but I'd be very afraid of maintenance and repair costs. So does older Audi. They're quite affordable actually, the older Audis (pre A4) weren't too popular here in the states.

2k1 Lexus IS300
I think it will be my next car, cross fingers. I love the Nissan Maxima's but I like the style of the IS300 over the newer max's.
My opinion.

I would buy a Volvo 240 with a clean body and no rust. Then I would use this kit to install this engine. Of course, I would upgrade to Konis, Ipd springs and swaybars, and at least 16 inch tires. And hey, while I am dreaming, I will go on and add a paxton blower to the mix.

Then it would be hunting season. Anything Honduh would most likely get destroyed...

I would go ahead with my attempt at building an S15 Silvia. Not a bad car for under $20k.

Probably a Legend 6-speed
possibly a 240 SX with a SR20DET swap
OTOH, the KA's can be made fast, too.

Who needs a V8. The Volvo T5 wagon has been clocked around 15 flat in the 1/4 mile! How's that for getting smoked by a mom with kids in the car.

I got blasted by an old gray haired guy in my 95 SI once. He was in an STS Caddy. Ouch.

Screw the SE-R Spec V. Dont know if you guys read Sport Compact Car but they did a big thing with that car and they were VERY dissapointed in it, its also in there latest issue. It only does 15.9 sec. @ 87.5mph in the 1/4 mile. Its claimed to have 175 hp but only dynoed 148 (BIG dissapointment for nissan). I would go with the NEW Dodge SRT-4 (its a new neon) it is $19k and it was dynoed by sport compact car with 223hp @ 5700rpm, 14.2 sec. @ 99.5mph and its turbocharged with a front mount intercooler. You gotta pic up the magazine and read about it, I hate Neons but this one is pretty bad a$$. Oh and it weighs 2,870. Its pretty sweet

Car and driver on the other hand loved the Nissan Spec V.

The neon SRT-4 does look cool...but it will always be a neon. Yuck.

Well personally looking at the performance output of the SE-R Spec V, i wouldnt waste money on it. I know its still a Neon but 223hp is sweet with a turbocharger and front mount intercooler which is pretty sweet too! SE-R doesnt impress me at all, I mean come on, they claim 175hp but ony dyno's 146, thats a hudge drop off! Plus turbo sure beats the VTC by a long shot! Also i could beat 15.9 in the 1/4 mile with my VE

Have you seen the R2 kit for the WRX?

0-60 4.4
1/4 mile 12.9 @ 107MPH
skidpad .90

Cost: $12,995 (including Sparco racing seats)

Total cost of the car: $38,895

Ouch. (Its in the back of the new Car and Driver, check it out)

ummm thats only a 29hp drivetrain loss...the 5spd VE Maxima is around the same. and as for 15.9s I'm not sure which SE-R drivers you've seen in action...mid/low 15's tend to be the norm from what I've seen.

I meant M2...

And I am quoting what Car and Driver said the cost was.

Thanks for mentioning this.
