You're gonna have to get it rebuilt. Nissan no longer carries transmissions for 3rd gen maximas.

I got mine rebuilt about a year ago and it cost me 1400 with a 6 month warranty and it went bad again about 3 months ago. They charged me 900 the second time to fix it again....not much I could argue about since the warranty was only six months. They tried to tell me that usually when they come back like that so soon, its a "young" driver. So after 14000 miles, he tried to blame the failure on me. Now granted, I am a spirited driver and will put the rpms up around 5000 every now and then, but with no mods on the engine and a newly rebuilt tranny, that kind of driving shouldn't have caused another failure. Moral of the story: GET A GOOD WARRANTY

This is what I say to our auto tranny:

DEFINENTLY...I went through 2 trannys before I got it right...never payed a dime after the first rebuild though because my warranty was for 3 years....so getting a good warranty is definently a point to be stressed!!!

Yes, they do. I don't know about fully assembled but you CAN still buy all of the parts (including gears and shafts) new from Nissan. For a complete and total rebuild, you're looking at about $3K if you go that route, though.

It depends on what is broken. You don't want to go to a shop that will quote you for a rebuild without taking the thing apart and looking at it. That is a good sign you're getting ripped off. Generally, they will need to replace the springs, bearings, and seals. Sometimes, you will need entire gears replaced, sometimes (as in my case) it's so bad that you decide it's time to learn how to rebuild it yourself just to keep the cost out of the thousands...

Actually, that was for a manual. Autos are even more complicated and require even more parts replaced (usually).

Manual or auto?? I wouldn't recommend trying to rebuild an auto. I've never personally tried. I can't really speak on it. I can say that I'm getting ready to rebuild a 5 speed and the transmission is the most confusing and complicated part of any car. It's amazing! I finally got my case open, and a million parts flew out at me (most of which were broken in to pieces)! So many pieces...
