resonators

can our exhaust resonator go bad? if it can, are there any signs? when i had my magnaflow installed, the guy said he gotta change the resonators because it's bad. i told him i'll do it "later." i never heard of a resonator going bad before. so is he telling the truth or our resonators should last the lifetime of our cars? thanks

Re: resonators

I have never heard of anything like this and I don't think it is very possible, you would have to have done something really wrong to ruin a resonator.

it could be rusted but that would be the only way it is bad. I took mine off of one of my cars and looked in it and it doesnt have any packing in it like a muffler. Basically it is a larger pipe fitted over a smaller pipe with a hole in it.

So if he said it was bad it may be rusted or he may be full of it.

i'm pretty sure he was bs-ing. i was under the car with him when he inspected it. I myself didn't see any rust on the resonator.

My razor sharp diagnostic ability allowed me to know when the resonator needed to be replaced; it had a 2" hole in it. I replaced it with a $12.00 "Cherry Bomb" muffler (looks like the stock resonator but a little larger diameter).
