My '92 Maxima occasionally dies out when I shift it into gear. Any ideas on what the problem may be?

First question, auto or manual.....

does it occur as soon as you shift into gear or as you press the gas?? when was your last tune up?? what happens when you restart the car?

It's an automatic. The car never dies when the gas pedal is depressed. The times that the car dies out is erratic. I can't tell when its going to die out on me. Sometimes, it'll die out every couple of days and sometimes it won't die out til weeks later. It's very odd. Once I restart the car, the car usually returns to normal but sometimes it may require a few restarts before I can shift into drive.

how's your fuel filter doing? when was that changed last? what kind of gas are you using?..maybe try a tank or two if premium. good idea to run a tank of fuel injector cleaner.

my VG does that sometimes too..
the only remedy I can think of is that befor you start the car, turn the ignition to "on" and let the fuel pump prime itself.. you'll hear a faint sound of an electric motor running.. (there's actually 2.. one is the power antenna if it still works, and the other is the fuel pump)..
once you hear it stop running, THEN turn the key to start and start the car..
then just let the car sit for a few seconds to warm up and figure out where it is before you stick it in gear and try to drive off.
