Weak Brakes On My '91 Se

Hi all,

I just started the car this morning and when I stepped on the brake the pedal went all the way to the end with no pressure and only at the end did the brakes engaged (weak). I tried pumping the brakes which helped build up some pressure but only for a few seconds. Brake fluid was close the the max line. I added a few drops of brake fluid but it didn't make any difference. I tried pumping the brakes and check the floor underneath for any leaks --nada.

Any ideas or suggestions on what else to check before I bring it in to the dealer? Also, is there another post similar to mine that someone can point me to?

Thanks guys.

Brian

if you got air in the system you would get a "mushy" brakr pedal. but i'm not sure how you would have done that so it might not be air

vaccum leak or bad/weak master cylinder or brake booster.

Yeah, master cylinder was my first thought when I read the post. Try checking that out.

Re: Weak Brakes On My '91 Se

Hi guys,

If it was the master cylinder what is the labor cost (or total hours) to replace it? What is the labor involved to diagnose and/or bleed the brakes? I am sort of planning for this unexpected expense and have called one dealerhip's parts department: master cylinder $213, wheel cylinder $36/each (in case it is just a wheel cylinder).

Thanks again.

brake

Take off all four wheels and look at the calipers. Is there any signs of leak or dampness. Also, look at the master cyclinder. Is there signs of leak between the master cyclinder and the brake booster? I would try to replace the brake fluid and bleed the system first to double check Although I am leaning toward the master cyclinder seals going bad. Master cyclinder replacement is not hard, but I don't remmeber the price from the dealer.

you can find a used master cylinder for around 20 bucks. You can also rebuild your MC yourself with a rebuild kit...all it takes it putting in the new seals 'usually'. but a rebuild or replacement will require bleeding the brake system, and can be slightly messy.

Do have the brake system checked by a professional if u cant pinpoint the problem yourself.

Guys, thanks for all your responses.

I guess my last question is: Will it still be safe to drive the car to get it to the shop or should I just have it towed?

Just had the brake master cylinder replaced to the tune of $370. Not cheap but I believe not bad for an OEM part installed. Thanks to all who responded.
