Question about offsets

Wil a +42 offset fit okay on our cars? This would be on an 18 or 19 inch rim.

The fronts will fit, but will probably rub your splash guards on full lock.

The rears will not fit.

I have 16x8 wheels with a +50 offset. I've got 5mm spacers in the front, and 20mm adaptors in the rear.

http://www.dreamwater.org/auto/lordr...RX7wheels.html

It will also depend on your tires, but an adaptor, or spacers with longer studs are going to be needed on the rears. The only way to find out FOR SURE how large a spacer/adaptor you need is to get the wheels, with tires mounted, and try them on.

Luck!

Where can you get spacers and how much do they usually run?

try pep boys or someplace like that they're pretty cheap all they are is a plate with holes in it that you put on before you put the wheel on you can get different thicknesses. but I don't know if they'll fit, my 7.5's are pretty close the the shock tower (I'm talkin like 1/4 inch) and I got a set of spacers on em. and you can't go too big with the spacer cause them the studs won't be long enough to bolt the wheel on.

Check out the page I linked to.

You can get generic spacers just about anywhere, but the ones I got are hubcentric and fit perfectly.

Okay, if those would not fit with a 235/40 tire, would a 225/40 tire make enough of a difference?

My roommate has a 94 SE and has 225/40's with spacers on the rear and said he has no problems with tires rubbing.

How big of spacers should I get? I'm guessing around 5-8 mm up front, but really no clue on the back.

with my 7 inch wide wheel i have about 3/8 inch of space between the tire and the stut housing and your wheels are 1 inch wider than mine so do the math.

5 will be fine on the front, you might still rub the heat sheilds on full lock, but nothing to be concerned about.

The rear is a different problem. You can attack it two different ways.

The way I did the rear was with a 20mm adaptor with studs built in. This was a good solution for me since I have a huge 50mm offset on my wheels. You might try going with a ~12mm spacer and extra long studs, but that gets pretty expensive. It's really up to you.

Just be aware, if you use any adaptor with built in studs that is under 27mm, you have to have pockets in the backs of your wheels so your stock studs will have a place to go.

luck!

What exactly do you mean by pockets in the backs of the wheels? I have found adaptors that the stock studs bolt onto. The adaptor has studs on it that you would mount the wheels to. Is that what you are talking about?

Yes, those are the adaptors... did you look at my RX7 wheels page?

Think about how long the stock studs are, they are about 27mm. Now if the adaptors are thinner than that, the studs will stick out past the adaptors. They need some place to go, and that is in the back of the wheel.... hence, the wheel will need pockets.

Do you think +35 would be okay on an 8.5 rim?

8.5" wide is pushing it for a 3rd gen. The only way you are going to be able to tell if it will fit is try it on. Most likely a 8.5" wide wheel with a 35 offset will fit the fronts, but not sure about the rear. You also have to figure in the size of the wheel(16,17,18) because the rear strut casing has a bit of a lean in at the top.

The only problem is that I don't want to drop $2k on a set of rims and then find out that they don't fit. Only to have to send them back and be charged a restocking fee. That would cost $100 for shipping back to the place I bought them and then another $200 for the 10% restocking fee.

I'm running 17x8 rims w/ about 30-32mm offset. 8.5" "might" fit but you would have to run at least 245-255 width tires. That will make it difficult. Why run such wide rims? Not worth the rubbing to me.

No spacers. Factory offset on wheels is fine. Mustang bolt pattern is same as Maxima.
