Na its nothing important. I took it out to fit my box and have read many other post of other members that have done the same. I dont think it really serves any important purpose.

I am not sure if its an important part or not because not all Maximas have them.

My 93 doesnt have it but my 92 does. So if its an important part of the suspension or really does anything besides distribute a little weight then why is it not on all of the 3rd gens?

I dont think my 90 has it either but cant remember and I have no ideal on the parts car since there is a 5 speed trans along with most of the parts to do a conversion in the trunk.

I am thinking that maybe it has something to do with some cars for the states that get snow and need extra weight in the trunk for traction or something but I dont really think that nissan makes cars with the intent of them going to certain states (except cali of course) and says "ok lets send this one to NY and put a weight in there to make it better in the snow"

well 92's and up may not need it because they may have added something else you can see, that replaced it.

I have only seen these things in GXE's. I read a post saying that it also reduces vibration.

It only comes on GXEs. (SEs don't have it.) All it does is reduce vibrations and road noise. it's safe to remove, as long as you seal the bolt holes through the floorboard with something NON-porous (wood is NOT acceptable).

I pulled it out of my GXE and noticed zero difference.

Actually, there was one on my '91 SE auto. I took it out months ago with no problems.

Matt93se knows his stuff although I did cover it with Wood(temporary) but I am going to replace soon with metal. I have noticed no differences in ride either. The box and subs I put in the trunk probably compensate for the big weight anyway.
