: Ok so I take my car to my mechanic friday (and if fate had its way that's when my light would come on) so he could read the ecu error code.. I got a 51. anyone know what this is?? He spent all day friday messing around with it & it was great because the light did come on & it helped him to narrow down the problem..he got the certain part of the engine, he thinks it may be electrical...he's not sure if its sensors, wires or the injector itself...and he spent all day working on it..so I left it there last night and he goes to work on it this morning & she didn't act up at all...so far it seems she is acting up every other day..basically he told me not to bring her back until it's acting up all the time or its dying on me...he doesn't think it will die on me yet, but it will just run ****ty....very ****ty...

I dont think that is good advice! If you let the promblem get worse than you are going to have to pay more to fix.

well this is a trusted mechanic...I take my car to him for all of my work & he is usually very honest with me..some things he wont do to my car if it means something else bad will happen etc...blah blah but if he can't figure out the problem with out it acting up how is he supposed to fix it? thanxs for the thought.

Intermittent problems are the worse

Problems that seems to happen at certain times are hard to diagnos. I can understand your mechanic reasoning for telling you to continue driving the car. Or he can take a guess and keep changing parts until he gets the correct one then you're $000.00 in the hole. Just try not to go on long distance driving trips until if repaired, it might act up at such time.

thanxs for the input guys...I wish I could not go on long trips...unfortunately I drive 30 miles one way to work...luckily though I will be moving soon & can carpool to work. I'm trying to hold out for 1 more year until my car is paid off then I can buy a new car. I haven't decided if I want t sell this one or just keep it...decisions decisions....I also thought about trying to sell it if I get it fixed...I would love to get a 99 SE max...

Someone has to get a hold of the FSM to find out what an error code 51 is. Try making that a thread question. The only advantage dealers have is the manuals and diagnostic tools. They don't necessarly know what they're doing though.

well, here you go. I have a Haynes manual for the maxima and it says code 51 is a "fuel injector signal circuit fault". that is the direct quote. you are welcome.

new car

I have been kicking this idea arround myself lately. As long as the body of the car is in good condition why not just have a rebuilt motor put in? After I get a job I am going to seriously start looking for another 3rd gen that has a clean title. from there I'll probably get a second motor and do a build up on it. This is actualy a lot cheaper that geting a 4th gen max..

just a thought
