setting idle.........
i was trying to find how i can bump my idle up a bit, but i cant seem to find where i can do it. i know that its in the back and just screws wiht a flat head counterclockwise to increase but i cant find it. waht kind of RPM's do most of you got when in drive? i want to put it about 700
Factory service manual says 750 +/- 50. It is more of a process to set the idle than you mention. I wrote out the instructions on detail to a guy on the Maxima mailing list. I'll post to my site, those instructions and/or mail them to you when I get to my other computer's "sent item's."
Hey thanx guys, but one quick thing. is there such a thing as too high? im not talking like crazy high but like 800?
i have a system and i dont want to drain the barrery when im playing it because be4 if i was at a redlight the system would drain so much that the RPM's woudl drop and cause stuff to dim so im hoping that bummping up the idle will help and it has so far alot smoother too

IMO, don't mess with the idle just to compensate for the charging system on the Max. The charging systems on these cars aren't too great to begin with, but you're going about it completely the wrong way! Just buy a Cap and/ or Optima battery, that's what they're made for!
here's the procedure per the FSM
As promised, here's the message I wrote to a guy on the Maxima mailing list back in December:
Andy, let me know if this procedure deviates from yours. I haven't had time to look at yours and compare. I would take your word for what works because I have never done it myself. Let me know if this procedure is correct and I'll put it in my FAQ on my website. Thanks!

Biodun,
Here are some instructions from the FSM on your idle speed. Make sure the engine is warmed up to operating temperature before making adjustments. Also, before jumping the gun and adjusting the idle, the FSM suggest making sure your air cleaner is clean, your hoses and ducts are in good shape, your EGR valve is operating correctly, electrical connectors are in place, gaskets (probably mean throttle body gaskets).
1) Check idle speed (A/t: in "N" position), it should be at 700 - 800 rpms for the VG motor
a. if it is fine, email me for further instruction
2) If it is not, close the A.A.C. valve completely by turning the diagnostic mode selecton on the E.C.U. fully clockwise
a. this is the screw on the right side of the ECU (shown in figure)
b. (The ECU is behind your ashtray)
3) Adjust engine speed by turning idle speed adjusting screw
a. this is located on the engine just to the right of the dual throttle bodies.
b. the screw faces upward and is on the device called the A.A.C. valve.
4) Operate the A.A.C. valve (open it) by turning the diagnostic mode selector on E.C.U. fully counterclockwise
