I spent 20 minutes today trying to explain to someone that if when you replace a catalytic converter and it feels sluggish and starts to smell hot and the converter turns red you have a serious fuel problem. A catalytic converter is meant to burn contaminants and unburned hydrocarbon material in your exhaust, not gasoline.

"The fuel that powers your vehicle is meant to burn in the combustion chamber only. Any fuel that leaves the combustion chamber unburned will enter the exhaust system and light-off when it reaches the catalytic converter. This can super-heat the converter far above normal operating conditions and cause a Melt Down. Possible causes are an incorrect fuel mixture, incorrect timing, corroded spark plugs, a faulty oxygen sensor, sticking float, faulty fuel injector or a malfunctioning check valve."

This is a link on our site which tells all about them and why they fail. http://www.car-sound.com/page2.htm

A regular muffler shop usually charges about $200 plus to replace one so make sure you fix the problem which caused it to go bad in the first place before you ruin a new one. Not even a Random Tech cat is meant to burn gas and they are a lot more expensive than ours.
