Sorry to post this, but search still doesn't work. The automatic transmission on my '89 GXE (90,000 miles) has started giving a jerk when shifting into second from first. The problem is worse under hard acceleration and/or when the car is cold. All other shifts are fine. The fluid was reacently flushed and still looks clear, no burnt smell. I don't know any good tranny shops in my area. Should I start worrying?

Screw the automatic and go for a 5-speed! they are cheaper to buy and cheaper to rebuild if you ever need it done. But thats just my opinion

I agree with you, but I'm a grad student just trying to keep my Maxima running until I can afford a newer one, which may indeed have a 5-speed. Does anyone else have anything more useful?

I have the same problem, the car jerks when shifting from first to second. I haven't even thought about the transmission though, I have other car problems to worry about

Im having the exact same problem. Hard shift from first to second only I just had my tranny fluid changed too. I have no clue what the hell it is but Im just going to ride it until it dies.

man my trany does that too. it shifts rather hard from 1st to 2nd with a cold engine/tranny. the shift isn't as hard when everything is up to temp, but the car still kinda jerks. but under WOT, no jerk is felt.

Guesing my tranny is about go poo poo on me...

Guys dont worry, that is normal operating conditions for our trannys. But if the start to slip..........

it's just been shifting hard for a few month or so. but yes you're right, if it starts to slip

let the car fully warm up before going over 2-2.5k rpm. And if its jerking at WOT throttle shifts and you cant afford a new one, dont go WOT

My 91 SE gives a little squeak and a jerk shifting from 1 to 2 when it's cold. I was thinking about getting a standard, but should I sell my baby , or replace the tranny (hard work)?

93maxVG, thanks for the good news. nTesla, you're better off selling your baby and buying another max with a standard. Trust me on this one. Just make sure your fluid is clear (change if necessary) and topped off before you go to trade it in.

Well here's the thing. I would like to have a manual transmission, but I really like my 1991 and call me crazy, but third gen stock looks better than the best mods on a newer maxima. So if'n I'm not gonna replace her a/t with a stick, I'm either gonna drive her into the ground, or I'm gonna sell her and buy another third gen with a stick. But I'd hate to sell her now. She deserves a proper funeral.
