VE vs VG Gauges
Hey guys,
I was helping out AntonTheGrey today with his car (89 5spd), I gave him the clock from my 3rd gen because it was functional and his wasnt. Anyway, hes been having problems with his water temp gauge working (I dont know about that though), but also his speedo, Its funny, his speedometer will sometimes match his Tach, ie. we were going back to my house and he yelled for me to come over and look, (i was in my car), and he was parked but it said he was going 15mph, then while he revved it, it would reach about 55mph. As soon as he took the parking brake off (foot on the brake) it stopped. I had him put his parking brake back on, but it still read 0mph so I figure it had to do with the slight movement (more like weigh shifting) had triggered the speed sensor and it started working again????
oh yeah, anyway we took apart his gauges, I figured may have been a bad connection with the water temp (or is it engine temp? I cant remember). I noticed in the bottom right hand corner it said 1024rpm = 60mph. I remember my VE gauges said the same thing, or similiar, I cant remember because its been atleast 3 months but I'm pretty sure it was the same 1024rpm = 60mph.
So now I'm wondering, if they are infact the same, I would think that a VE -> VG gauge swap would infact work. With his permission, I'm more than willing to give it a shot, I would only need 10 mins of his time, and hey, he would then get new VE gauges
Anyone have experience with this? I'm sure someones given it a shot before....

woah! VE gauges will work in a VG? lol, I was expecting to get a whole bunch of "no's" (not that I wouldnt try anyway ). It makes sense that it would, as long as the 1024rpm = 60mph was the same.
So as long as the speedo would be accurate, looks like the swap is a go, except I might have to draw in a redline for him

hermm, nice to hear... but the thing I'm concerned about is whether the speed will remain the same or will i have to re-calibrate the ecu to give me a correct speed (kinda like putting bigger or smaller tires on).
I know both gauges are the same size and the swap will work, it's just that the scale is different. Hermmm, any answers?

but thats the thing Anton, I dont think the scale is different...
I noticed on your guages that it said 1024rpm = 60mph, and I am almost completely sure that mine have the same ratio. Its not judging the 1024rpm based on your engine, instead is based on a speed sensor (generally in the tranny, and is gear driven.
That is however starting to confuse me only because of the whole speedo matching rpms thing. I thought you had your foot on the clutch when that happened, but if it was in neutral and your foot was off the clutch it would make more sense...
wierd...

once again Kaleb saves me alittle detective work
I suppose we should still figure out if the speed sensor is going bad, along with the water temp sensor? its up to Anton, but I doubt its a problem with the gauges.

actually if more than just the speedometer is messing up its usually the gauges.
It doesnt take long to try the gauges first and then if its the sensor you can buy one of those.
Gauges are cheap speed sensor isnt.

IT DOES WORK! I have 93SE 145mph gauges on my '91 GXE converted 5spd. It worked fine/accurate when it was auto and it is still the same with it now manual. There are absolutely NO problems, and everything works fine. Hope that answers everyone's questions.

Swap out the whole gauge cluster. The gauges (atleast the speedo) is claibrated differently between the 125mph and the 145mph gauges. If you put the 145 face on the 125 gauges, you would get false speed readings because the needle would be moving according to the 125 gauges.
If you were to just swap out the speedo only, it possiably could work, but its more work than to just swap out the whole cluster, granted its not much more (6 screws and 7 tabs).

i swapped mine a long time ago so it does work. mine came from a '93 SE as well with the 145mph mark. i didn't swap the whole the cluster i just replaced the white faces with the black ones and it works just fine.

hey guys ,
if you just switch the faces on those gauges youll get GXE speeds so infact when your going 40 your speedo will say something like 55. You have the switch the whole gauge to get accurate readings when converting gxe to se clusters , just the white faces wont cut it. Also all you people who wanna switch your SE gauges with GXE ones be prepared to lose your ABS and airbag if your are so properly equipped. With that being said who the heck would wanna do that anyway?

I put se gauges in my 92GXE and I still have my airbag light (I dont have abs)
I am still trying to figure out how you think you would loose your abs and airbag with a gauge install.

maybe he didnt put the bulbs back in, and they didnt light up in the Key On position?
I think he's just backwards, my AntonTheGrey's gauges dont have the airbag text in the light hole, but mine do. Like others have done, you can just make yourself a shift light.
