Removing Cams, and suggestion needed

Removing Cams, and suggestion needed: Update Below!
I've got the heads off my '89 for a valve job. I am tearing down the head before taking it to the machine shop. The book, and the chiltons on-line says to remove the cam seal and then remove the cam. Is there a step I'm missing? Everything is apart, but I cannot seem to get the cam out.
Also, I'm really torn about getting some performance cams for this thing. I really want to do it, but then again its just my winter car. It looks good, and I'll have it for at least another year.
Anybody have suggestions and maybe some links to good cams?

had the same problem...struggled with the cam and then realized there was that one retainer bolt behind the plate...I was like
as for choices of cams...Nismo Euro and Motorsport 260s are a affordable and decent choice for a standard bolt-on automatic VG. you could go more aggressive, but you say this is just a winter beater for you so no real point.

Yeah, I saw that bolt. I was running out of time so I didn't go any further.
I'm guessing I'll call Motorsport tomorrow. I'm looking that these:

as for VE cams, there aren't any(one advantage of the VG over the VE)...of course you could have Crower or maybe Web Cams make you a custom regrind or new billet set, but being that the VE has 4 camshafts, good luck with the bill, it might be some $$$!

You could have Crower or Web do a custom grind. And you don't have to do all four. You could get good gains just from doing intakes or just doing exhaust. You would need adjustable cam gears in any case and I haven't seen any of those available for the VE either.

same head...I've seen Z31 aftermarket cams done on 2 VG Maximas with no trouble. make sure they know you want the N/A cams. you have to realize they probably never really sell these to Maxima drivers so this might be kinda surprising to them.
