3rd gen automatic tranny problem

Ok, I have a '90 maxima with 122,000 on it. I have never had a bit of trouble with the automatic tranny 'till the other day. Went to back out of the driveway in the evening, after it being driven that day, and put it in drive. Nothing happend, car free reved like it was in neutral. Cycled through from neutral to drive and it worked. After a few days of it doing the same I have figured out that if I bypass drive and go straight into 2nd or 3rd and then put it into drive that it works fine. When I first start the car, if I put it directly into drive it will sit there and then slowly engage after a minute or so. Kind of like it has to build pressure up, but if I go into a lower gear first it is fine. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? My tranny mechanic said he hadn't heard of that problem yet. Any ideas or help would be a huge help. Thanks.

could it be a shifter/tranny bushing problem? if it is, then they are only $4 in parts and about 1 hour to replace.

anybody else?
