transmission problem please help

I bought my maxima a year ago. About 98% of the time I had to use the shift switch to get the car out of park. Also about 20% of the time when I put the car in the drive position the transmission won't engage so I had to put the car in another gear (like neutral) then back to drive and the car kicks in no problem. I parked the car 4 two weeks without driving it and the problem went from 20% to 40% especially when I started it up after the two week break. Last week when I was driving the trans just stopped on me. The engine and everything still works but the car won''t move when I put in into gear. Also another strange thing when I started the car again to try to see what's wrong when I try to put it back in park I get a loud noise from the trans that sounds like 100 bags of popcorn popping. I want to bring the car to a mechanic but If the trans is gone I might as well leave it where it is and sell it 4 parts. What's your guys opinion is the trans gone. Could it be just a shift sensor or something?

The bushings are a couple of dollars at a local dealer. I don't think most people pay to have them replaced, its a DIY job from what I understand. I guess we'll see, I bought mine yesterday.

It should not cost you more than $40. I had mine replaced with my regular mechanic and he didn't charge me anything.

It is located underneath the Shift. You have to jack it up to see.
