Vibration and low pitched noise when turning

I tried to search but I came up empty. Sometimes when I turn at very low speeds (i.e., U-turns or pulling into a parking space) I feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel and hear a low pitched rubbing noise, no clicking though. It only happens sometimes. The steering is basically fine at all other speeds other than a shimmy at 65MPH. I know I need an alignment and a balancing but could there be a real problem here? Its a well maintained '93 SE automatic with 92,000 miles. Please help. Thanks
