Transmission problem

I just bought a 93 maxima se that has a shifting problem. It's auto, and when it's about to switch gears it's unable to do so, car starts pulling back and forth, and it slows down. I take the foot off gas pedal, then start accelerating slowly again. This doesn't occur at every gear shift or always, only occasionally. The guy that sold it to me took it to a repair shop and they allegedly fixed the "air flow" since he said he had the same problem a couple years ago. I'm worried that it's the transie itself rather than the "air flow" or whatever term he used. Anyone familiar with this problem? The title and door label say car is 12/92, but the manual says it's 1993.

On a side note, I managed to get anaximander instead of amaximander. Is an admin able to change usernames?

One more thing, after he had the "air flow" fixed for me, it ran good for about a day then it started doing the same thing again. Not as bad as before but it's still there.
