Help - check engine light and misfiring with VE Engine

I could use some assistance with this problem that just came up a few days ago. I got a 94 SE 5 spd.

The car ran fine and then suddenly, the check engine light came on and the engine is misfiring like crazy.

The idles is good but you can still feel some misfiring. Acceleration is non existent at this moment.

I put in new spark plugs but that did not help at all. I will install new fuel filter and fuel line tomorrow. I do not think this will solve the problem either.

Anyone with a similiar problem?

I read the post but you had another problem that I do not.

I am consistently getting 380+ miles before I have to refuel the tank so my fuel consumption is fine.

Did you ever check the error code? or should I take it in to have the error code decoded to tell me what is the problem?

I do not even know where to look and how to decipher the blinking LEDs.

Get the FSM. If you are serious about keeping your max and doing most of your own maintenance, the FSM will prove to be an invaluable reference. Look at it as a mod.

Engine Codes

Take off the plastic panel on the passenger side front seat middle by your feet. Behind it is the ECU. Turn the key to the on position and check that the led lights. (Light check)

Start the car and note the flashing pattern. Should be a series of long and short flashes. The longer flashes is the left digit the shorter the right digit. IE one long and 2 short will be a 12 which would be the mass air flow sensor. Diagnosic Mode 1

It seems that it either could be one of your injectors or one of your coils. Check to see if any of the coils are cracked. Next, you can check the resistance of the injectors (see manual). From what you describe, that seems to be your primary culprits.

You need to run the ecu diagnostics BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE. There's not enough info for an accurate diagnotics yet. Run the code and advise what it came up with. THEN we can see what's up.

well, this is what has happened so far.

After I changed out the fuel filter, the car still had the problem.

However, two days later, the check engine light disappeared and now the car run perfect again.

I just do not get it. I will change out the PCV this weekend.

Thanks to all who commented. I am curious now how can a bad fuel filter can cause the engine light to come on?

run the ecu diagnostic and get the error code. It's still in the computer.

Hey i have a very similar problem going on...very random...appears and disappears...i have an 89 SE 5spd. i just changed s[ark plugs, wires and fuel filter...although the car has become very smooth running...sometimes the RPMS jump upto 1500 and stay there...the car hesitates a bit when i press the accelerator lightly.

ECU gives
Mode 1 = both LEDs on constantly
Mode 2 = Only green LED on constantly
Mode 3 = code 55
nothing in mode 4 and 5...no flashes at all.

could it be a bad fuel pump? O2 sensor? ignition coil?
