I cannot time this thing. I took the t-belt covers off again, and I've determined that there is no way humanly possible to make the left sprocket line up with the punch mark.

Its like there is not enough teeth between left sprocket and the crank. Or the right and left sprocket. The marks on the belt are the correct count, soo I don't understand.

Aanyway, I thought I had it right. The dist was even in a good place. Not perfect but good not that far from center.

It still ran like crap, and the timing light shows the timing closest mark about 2 inches to the right of the post.

I dunno what to do with it.

I think its time to buy a 2k2 5spd.

Were the cam shafts put back in properly after the valve job? From what you describe, that seems to be the only logical conclusion: your engine was not reassembled correctly.

. . . also, go ahead and get the 2k2 5spd. When I get the chance, that is what I want; however, I will wait a couple of more years to see if I can come across a 2k3 5psd for a reasonable price.

Well, the cams only fit into the heads one way... The cam sprocket only goes on one way. The lifters on the rail only fit one way.

???

Unless you've put the right camgear on the left side everything should line up. Also before you put the distributor there are 2 marking on the housing. Which marking did you line up the dot on the distributor gear with? Also when you try to set the timing the ECU has to be in diagnostic mode III, then you have to rev it over 3000rpm 3 times to lock in base timing.
