My 1989 Maxima SE (Automatic) is reaching the 130K mark. I was wondering if you guys have any tips to keep the tranny in good shape. As of yet I have not had any problems with it, and I don't know the previous history (if the tranny was replace or rebuilt). It still is running ok (Thank God), I have heard the horror stories. If you have any tips or maintenence advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Max91se is right.......

you'll find plenty in the archives, but just to throw two things out there, auxiliary trans cooler is A MUST and if you really wanna keep it in shape though add on a Transgo shift-kit as well, a little more work/money but none the less it helps!

Thanks for the reply,

Just one question though: What is auxiliary trans cooler? Can you buy it? Where does it go? What does it do? And I did an archive search but didn't come up with much. Do you know any keywords to search for? Thanks for your help.

Re: Re: Max91se is right.......

if you take a look on your car right now, on the right/left(depends how you're looking at it) side of your radiator you'll see what look like a smaller, "mini" radiator, well thats the stock trans cooler, but it's not good enough (IMO and others will agree too). so you buy another cooler (i.e- a B&M Super Cooler(size 15-19 GMV)from craparts.com or Autozone) and you run it "inline" after(or before can't remember) the stock cooler. so you're basically cooling the trans fluid DOUBLE, thus keeping all the trans internals nice and cool when they flow into the torque converter, etc.! an extra cooler will run you about $50 and looks to be an easy DIY install, but if you can't do it yourself, a shop should charge no more than $100 to put it in for you! its highly suggested!
