Two secrets to good gas mileage
1) Good gas
My last tank, I was feeling sluggish, even got beat my a civic that I had romped on a couple months ago when I was auto. I couldn't even chirp the 2-3 no matter how hard I tried.
Also, on the last tank, I had to run with the fuel light on just to get 175 outta a full tank. This one, didn't even fill up entirely, I'm at 245 with about 30 miles to go before the light will come on.
2) Drive like me
I do all my shifting under 2k, so basically I drive it like a grandma stole it.

I didn't mean it to sound like I was just downshifting into second and continously attempting to chirp. I've just done it a couple times when racing.Thing is, I drive like a grandma about 90% of the time. Rarely do I get about 2k rpm with any shift. I'm getting this baby rebuilt in the summer anyways, so it's gotta last me until then.
Thanks for the warning though
You get all settled in yet?
shift at 4k, be nice to it. you're taking more gas shifting at 2k then at 4k
i averaged 320-330 to a tank in my old 92 se being nice to it, cruizing at 85 or so, hell it got 35 mpg cruizing at 105 mph.
its all in the throttle position.
i get about 330 out of my pathfinder, shifts at 4k cruizin at 75 all day long.
so go ahead and ruin your clutch, put a lot more added stress on your rod bearings and everything else in the lower end to save a few pennies
be my guest.

yup.. what bryan said.. by shifting so low, you're actually causing more stress and wear on the engine because you're lugging it through the gears. these engines aren't designed to run at 1500rpm all day. that's cold IDLE speed, not cruising speed! let that puppy run up to 3-4k before you shift. it's MUCH easier on the engine and tranny, and you'll get there faster to boot.
I'm on my second 3rd gen, and both have given me good gas mileage.
I do about 5 hrs highway speed (90 - 100 mph
) on a tank of gas, probably about 350 - 400 miles.
Just got back from Miami with my family, fully loaded trunk with suitcases, 4 adults and a child, and did Atlanta in two tanks of gas (was on fumes when I pulled in the driveway tho)
The key for me is using the cruise control, I know many of you guys do not like it, but it maintains smooth acceleration and a constant speed throughout your trip. The calmest of nerves and stilest of feet cannot beat that.
Also, my car has never drank anything other than AMOCO ULTIMATE with injector cleaners and/or gas treatment in every three tanks, like clockwork.

according to nissan spec what is mpg for highway and streets? i only get about 225-240 and that seems low. I am doing a tune up over time. I dont want to spend 80 bucks for o2 sensor if i dont have to. how do i test o2 sensor?
Last tank I got about 300 miles with some pretty hard driving. This tank I'm going to get atleast 350 miles with a mix of hard driving and just cruising. I generally shift at 3000rpm or 3500-4000 if I'm on a hill or just need to get up and go abit quicker. I believe the fidanza is netting me better gas mileage, I dont have a resistor in place for the knock sensor, and I have no clue how many miles are on my O2 sensor, but the guy I got it from told me its been threw hell and back. VTC's are grounded.
2 secrets...
1 - borrow someone's car...make up an excuse for yours not working. return car when gas light is on.
2 - drive around people who will pay for your gas. "gotta go to X"...."ok sure just pay for gas".... make sure you're close to the E mark so you get the full benefit of a full tank of gas.
you can rack up over 300 miles on no gas cost to u

When mine was on a deader than dead E, the tank fit 16 gallons.

I perpetually get about 215 miles to the gallon, and i know my o2's are good. The fuel filter may need some checking up on. You people shifting around 3500 and 4000 rpm are totally foreign to me. I shift at 5-6k+ unless i'm in casual traffic or in the gear for an extended period.
Back and forth across the state on the highways, i've gotten almost 320 miles to the tank. The pampered old 89' gave me about 300 in town and 400-450 on the highway, and i've been just assuming the VE was a little more needy.

Man, I wish I got gas millage like that. You sure your not driving one of those new Hybrid cars. You know half gas half electric.

when my vg 5-speed was running i could get about 400 miles to the tank with mostly in town driving. i read somewhere that best fuel economy is at your peak torque because that's where it is most efficient. on the VG's, since they have peak torque at 2800 rpm or so, it's good to take it to 3000 rpm. if you cruise around and try to keep it near peak torque you should get good gas mileage if everything on your car is in good shape.
less air in your tires = more tire wear and less mileage. more air in your tires = less rolling resistance, less wear and better mileage.
Less air = more traction, more air = less traction, so you have to find the balance, which is what the factory ratings are for.

Yeah, I autocrossed my 205/65's at 33 psi. They are the best tires ever.
I just got 320 miles on a full tank of gas to the 1/4 tank mark don't know how many gallons that is though. Mines a 92se 5sp and I did do a couple 1/4 mile runs and 0-60 runs with my Gtech pro with that tank too so there must be something wrong with yours although most of my driving was highway though. I usually shift at 3-4k rpms as well. Used to revving high from my Celica god I miss that 7800 rpm redline.
low shift points
I manage 300 to 350 with mostly in town driving (pizza delivery, I know, I know, I need the money) on my ve 5spd. I almost always shift below 2k rpm, except when I feel the need to smoke a ricer of two.
So it sounds like my mileage will go up when i fix my hole ridden flex pipe and allow myself to shift higher....RAD!
BTW this is my first post so, HI!

yeah, but
I love delivering in this car. I never get tired of driving it. The problem is I just can't stand beating it up like this. All the starting and stopping and hard city driving is not healthy for such a nice car.
I just checked my mileage on my 91 SE (vg) and got 28 mpg, and that was almost all in twon. Granted, I really wanted to see what the upper limits of this car were, and I used every trick I know to get the most out of a tank: cruise control, coasting to lights (not to worry, I have a five speed) and shifting early, around 2k. I do not understand the physics or engineering logic of running your engine to 4 or 5k and expecting better gas mileage. Folks, it just won't happen. All I have is about 30 years of empirical evidence that tells me that lower revs will almost always yield higher mileage. Engine speed uses more gas, lots more in some cases.
that's not really true. read this, http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question477.htm

I knew that.
