ok guys, I was told when I bought my Maxima new back in the day...(94) that this year Maxima SE doesn't have a timing belt. I was reading spec off someones webpage just a sec ago and this guys tells his readers that the 92-94 SE does indeed have a timing belt. Anyone know if this car has one or not? If it does, well I guess I should be calling the dealership to have it changed because my car now has 151k miles on it....opps!! Any information would be appreciated.

No, it doesn't have a timing belt. Can I have the link to the page that says it does?

No timing belt. It has chain.

hmm...

ah, just went back and checked, it is a timing chain. Whats the difference and is this something that should be replaced every 60k miles? Thanks for your help Kaleb...

A timing belt is a rubber belt with fabric reinforcment. Like all rubber belts, it wears out. Manufacturers like to use it because it's lighter than a metal chain, so you can get more power. It's usually quieter too. Because it wears, it needs to be replaced before it breaks.

The chain, however, is made of metal. It's not an item that wears. It functions exactly like that of a bicycle chain, if you want to think of it that way. Your engine uses two chains, if I recall correctly.

Replacement?

Should this be replaced after a certain amount of miles?

IF you're bored I'd replace it at like 150K or so, but other than that no, it doesn't need to be replaced.
