Smell gas when key is cycled
Smell gas when key is cycled
I got this new car 94 GXE. I assume when I turn on the key the electric fuel pump runs for a few seconds to build up preasure (is that what I hear?) Afterwards I get a faint smell of gas, is this normal? Of course if I start & go I would never notice this, but I been playing with it in the garage just checking her out.
Basically check your fuel flow from tank to injectors and look for any leaks. There are some posts on here about lines leaking around the fuel tank, I think, as well as other places. I know it seems pretty general, but it could be leaking from anywhere, and it doesn't have to be alot for it to smell
95% of the fuel smell problems are the 1/4" lines on the injector rail.
fire up the car and look just to the side of the intake manifold for any leaks. you can follow the lines from the fuel filter (the can looking thing clamped to the firewall with hoses on each end) up to the beginning of the fuel rail. one of the rubber hoses is very close to the other end of that guy, so it'll be easy to trace.

I am having that problem on my 94 GXE. Last night I looked under the hood and actuall saw gas dripping (SCARY) from right hand side of the injector rail. (by a clamp that had a rubber seal) Like always the leak stopped after the engine was warm. Can the rubber seal be replaced to fix the problem, or does the entire injector rail have to be replaced?
Thanks

The rail shouldn't need replaced if it's just a hose & clamp that's leaking.
But you DO have to pull the manifold off and remove the rail from the car in order to get to the hoses..
And do it ASAP before you start yourself a nice gas fire under the hood.
