Is it worthwhile to replace transmission
Is it worthwhile to replace transmission
The transmission on my maxima seemed dead. The story is: when I backed up, the car seemed to run into something and I heard a sound from front, the power was lost on back gear, I could not back up
any more. I can drive forward, but only on first gear. It could not hold on second gear. So I think it is dead.
This problem may be caused by a collosion a few days ago. My wife drove this car into a pole while using cellphone. I know this is silly, buy what I can do. I found the transimission kind of leaking today. I checked online the price of transmissions for maxima, they are around $2000. Also, it is time to change timing belt and replace the damaged bumper and reinforcement.
My maxima is 94 automatic with 135000 miles. I have changed the six injectors and replaced new tyres and brakes, It was powerful and ran great. I really like it, but considering high expense of replacingt transmission,I don't know whether it is worthwhile to have the transmission replaced.
I can replace the timing belt and bumper and reinforement by myself.
Your input is highly appreciated.
Is this problem caused by the leakage?
How much to have transmission replaced or fixed?
Can I do it myself to change transmission?
any more. I can drive forward, but only on first gear. It could not hold on second gear. So I think it is dead.

I think its better to ask would you feel comfortable swaping the tranny yourself, and do you have the tools to do so? Anyone can do anything if motivated.
For me, its not hard, but I also am mechanically inclined and like to learn how to do things myself. I bought my car with a bad transmission so I knew what I was up for.
Shop around for the tranny, I know you can get one cheaper than that. Also I'm not to sure about your problems with it. I kind of got out of the Auto tranny thing a while ago and I dont want to give bad advice.

this is the one of the cheapest places to get a remaned one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33727
if you can change your timing belt you can proboly swap the trany but i would suggest a second helper beacuase they are heavey and a pain to get aligned

replace it yourself is possible, like Mr Gone said, but rebuilding......don't think so. however price will depend on whether you want the tranny rebuilt or if you buy used...a rebuild will indeed run you anywhere from $2000+/- but you can find a used tranny for around $6-800 and get away with an install for $4-500.

I have recently changed my Transmission it ran ran me a pretty penny. Initially it was 850. After a closer inspection of the Transmission I had to tack on another 744. I only paid 800 for my 94 Maxima and after the work was done I love this little bullet. I'm sure you can find the transmission cheaper than 2000. You can even have it rebuilt.

My local nissan dealer asked $2130 for rebuilt one and labor is almost $700.
I hope I didn't pay too much for it and the rebuilt one can last 60K.
