so fix em! gaskets and seals are "cheap" not too mention much cheaper than a new car.

I added the 3rd maxima to my collection tonight 93 GXE 406k km's one owner, original engine and tran, and it's smooth as butter. I love maximas, very reliable, you just need at least one good hook up for used parts(ie the .org)

My only question is: how much? I can always use a third car for parts or some other reason or another.

My moms Maxima has 235,000 on it. The original tranny (auto) lasted 233,000, with quite a few of those miles with me behind the wheel. So, yeah 3rd Gen Maximas are reliable. It's the car that got me hooked on Nissan.

1991 Maxima

Here are the some of the more substantial things I've replaced on my wife's Maxima:

83k T-Belt, H20 pump, Frnt Struts, All Brakes, Steering Rack, Tie-Rod Ends, All Filters, Outer CV-Joints
100k Spark plugs, Cap & Rotor
105k Driver's window regulator
110k Both Frnt Wheel Bearings, Both Ball-Joints, Pass Halfshaft, Shift-Rod Bushing

Things to note: Clock works intermittently, runs a little rough, paint holding up well, 26 mpg on highway, not as reliable as the Accord we sold to get this, not a reliable as my '89 Ford Taurus SHO either.

Water pump, 2 window regulators, clutch, slave cylinder, hoses, cv joints. Just the normal stuff that breaks after 10+ years.

140,000 and still going.

with the exception of the regulators and Shift-Rod Bushing, that is all normal on ANY car.

Probably one of the most reliable cars ever. Not to say they dont have their problems.

1. intake cam gear -----> not cheap
2. fuel injector
3. cv axles
4. manual tranny bearings

Steering rack, ball joints, wheel bearings..... aw come on, you know this stuff shouldn't be toast at 100k.

Seems pretty reliable and fun though plenty of little annoying problems that are not crucial.
I know some of these are covered in various threads, but if you have suggestions feel free to respond or PM.
I cannot normally repair stuff myself nor do I know much about cars in general.

98 SE

Digital dash board croaked; cannot see mileage, speed.
A/C croaked; it appears some circuit on dashboard is not functional.
Driver side door does not close so well because the door is hanging lower.
Auto tranny slips esp. from 1 to 2. but works with proper handling.
Cannot use Overdrive (low revolutions).
Back left window falls down and won't work (probably regulator as mentioned elsewhere).
Radio whines (I guess the capacitor problem)
No sound from Bose speakers; sometimes suddenly kick in and work.
Cassette player has very low sound; starts out semi ok then peters out.
Various electrical problems: high beams won't turn on, clock.
Driver side electrical lock does not work any more.
Axle boot problem (should I fix this?)
Vibration on the right front esp at high speeds; possibly related to brake change.
Broken antenna of course.

THere are a number of reason why a rack would go at 100K, and every sityation differs from another.

As for ball joints and wheel bearings, aw c'mon. Dependent on your driving and road conditions, replacing ball joints and wheel bearing are pretty normal; Nothing out of the norm I'd say.

I don't think there is a milegae guarantee on suspension parts. Heck, I busted a left strut and some other suspension components on a drain hole on the Belt Parkway (NYC) about 2 weeks after I changed them.
