I've got a 90 maxima SE with an auotomatic. Left a stop light and heard a loud bang. Car wouldn't go forward or reverse. Engine is fine. Park works also. NO noise other than a bang. Could this be the tourqe converter or did the input shaft snap? Did the transmission take a crap? Now you can put it in gear and rev it up and it seems just like it is in neutral. No noise or anything. Did a pump go out in the transmission? I need help on what it could be to see if it is even worth fixing. Any ideas?

mine went out like that but without the noise. well... i may have made the noise but i couldn't tell since i went over train tracks right when it went out. i took it to a tranny place and the guy said first and second gear went out. he said it was common in these trannies. 1800 dollars to fix it...

dead tranny. call the coroner to haul this one off and install another one.
could be broken shaft, could be broken torque convertor. whatever happened, you won't be able to tell until you've got the tranny out of the car.
have fun and good luck. hope for the best.

Check to make sure you didn't shear a CV joint. With a sheared CV the tranny would still be working, but no power transmitted through the Diff.
