Help on electrical problem

Hello,

I have a '92 GXE which I confiscated from my younger sister. The left lowbeam was out (faulty connector), and she took it to some skanky garage in NYC and the guy told her that the left side wiring harness wires were all bad and that there is not much he can do.

What he did do was to run a wire from the RIGHT side low beam 12V+ and spliced it to the LEFT side low beam 12V+. But he didn't cut the originial 12V+ wire on the left side, so he endedup shorting the 12V+ low beams together.

This caused the interior lights (speedo, button lights) to go out, and the tail light to go out when headlamp is on. I removed this ridiculous "fix" and then placed a new headlamp connector on left side. Now when the headlamp is turned on, I go not get any taillamps and none of the interior lights are on (except the clock and the warning lights in the speedo are okay).

I figure maybe he blew out a relay of some sort (the headlight also does something weird, when turned on, right side goes on first, 10 sec later, the left side turns on). I can't seem to find any fuses or relays...

Any help or hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

-Sage

The fuse box is on the drivers side, by the left knee.

there's a fuse for it.. it may say interior lights or dash lights or something like that, but that fuse covers all the dash lights and the tail lights. definitely shouldn't take any car back to that shop!

Another approach?

I had a somewhat similar problem.....see if it fits
The driver side high beam would not function consistently
At first it would be off when I turned the beams on, but seemed to kick in after awhile. Eventually it stopped working completely. The steering column control (turning directional wand) was eventually determined to be the culprit. In fact after I took it apart and cleaned the contacts its been working fine for 3 months or more. The only problem is when u open the control its a bit tricky to get back together.... In fact I am still on the lookout for a replacement,(ANYONE GOT 1 FOR SALE?) as the original is closed with a rubber band.

Try squirting some electrical contact cleaner into the switch
(when the ignition is off, and give it a chance to evaporate away).
Work it in bwith the switch and see if it affects the condition...
it worked for me for a period of time.

Thanks ADNY.

I actually figured it out, but I changed e-mail, and forgot to verify, so I wasn't able to post.

I spent 3 hours. Took dash apart, using voltmeter, chased all the wires from battery to interior fusebox, chased wires from headlights to interior fusebox. They were all good!!! I then realized that I didn't check the turn signal stalk.

That was the culprit. Nissan wanted $90 for a new one and 1 week wait. I went to radio shack to try to bypass the stalk and install a generic switch.

I then decided to take a peek at the turn signal stalk. There were lots of carbon deposits inside. I cleaned it, re-greased it, and put it back together. It works fine.

I actually got a turn signal stalk from Ebay. The one I fixed is working fine, and I did get it back together in one piece. If you'd like the stalk, you can buy it from me. I'll even open it up and clean it (I used my dremmel with buffing head to polish the contacts) if you'd like.

Thanks everyone for the help.
