Gauges: Red Needles - Blue Numbers...hmmm

Hey Guys,
Does anyone have any info or remember anyone's webpage who had done this? I remember seeing it when I first got my Black 93se and was going to do it but never got around to it. Now I'd like to do it to my 92's gauges, but I'm not too sure how to go about doing it. Do I just need to buy some LED's, resistors and just wire and aim them properly, possiably defuse them?

Thanks guys!

I've seen it done before too... Let me pull up this one site for a 4th gen. maxima to make sure I am talking about the same thing you are.

this guy has done a lot, and I like his modifications.

you can do that on almost any trunk by adding a little extra hardware (hinges and stuff)

search here or google for "flip-flop trunk" or something like that and you'll find tons of info

...and to answer your original question, Mr Gone, I have a sorta-kinda write up I borrowed (with permission) from a guy I was introduced to on altimas.net. He did some things with his gauges that, IMO, are waaay better than even MY Import Intelligence needle kit. Probably cheaper too, in the long run. You should find what I got on my "other" website:

http://www.msnusers.com/blackmalescarpics

Just click on the "Documents" link and it should be there.

I belive the proper way to do it is get reverse indiglow gauges, and backlight the console with red. Also, you can backlight with blue bulbs and purchase intelliglow needles, which have their own light source. I personally love the intelliglows, and they show some great examples.

Spipedong- I remember seeing that link a long time ago, this is what I was looking to do first:

but have the red be toned down abit.

Now I'm thinking more of a White/Blue combo like this:

but again, tone down the blue abit.

Looks like I'll have to find some LED's and resistors and hack apart a spare gauge cluster.
I experiemented with coloring the bulbs with a blue sharpie last night but they dont have the intensity or shade that I was looking for.

Yeah, I could use those, and there alot cheaper than I expected, but I still will need to wire single LED's for the needles. Thanks for the link!

That's sick.

Quick question. What are the best bulbs to get for behind the instrument cluster? I'm thinking those 4-led 168/194 bulbs. I bought 6-led 168/194 bulbs and tried them in my corners unfortunately they are more blueish/purplish than the "hyper white" that they were advertised as so I'm not gonna take a chance of getting pulled over for blue blinkers/corner lights. They are very bright though. Unfortunately the 6-led 168/194 bulb is too big to fit in the instrument cluster.

So which is the best to get for having the brightest instrument cluster? The 4-led ones?

do you have a spare cluster? if not, I have two if you want one...they are from a VG SE though, so you'd only be able to use it as a template.

oh...nm, I have a 92-94 VE cluster with my VG speedo if you want that...

If you are going to get the ones from superbrightleds.com, you should probably use the single led bulbs. The 4-led ones concentrate the light in one spot, so your gauges will be brighter in some areas than others. BTW I bought some of the blue ones from there for my gauges and they look very nice. Ill try and get pics up soon.

How do those needle kits work anyway? The site doesn't do a good job explaining how they work. Does something slide over the needles? How does it get wired up? What parts of the cluster need to be disassembled? The front plastic piece taken off I'm guessing?

There are, like, 4 little surface mount LED's on a plastic ring which, in turn, are connected by copper wire to a transformer. The rings have to be put around each needle and mounted flush with the gauge face. That involves taking the actual needle off. It's kinda complicated.

Oh, and for those who wanted to see those gauges, I posted a pic of them on page 4 of my website.

If you're talking about the needles, I got 'em from Import Intelligence. Gauges are from CustomMaxima.
