muffler questions

haha.. i dont know what to do.. i had a problem with a b-pipe rusting out a few months back and i had all the piping replaced. Removed the cat and resonator /w SS 2.5" piping, but left the stock muffler on. The mechanic told me it would be loud, as i would expect because of increased exhaust flow.. but strangely enough.. it was silent, when i turned the car on.. i had no idea that it started because it was so silent. Well, i finally came up with some money to buy a muffler and i was unsure as to which I should buy. For sure its gotta have a silencer because I dont wanna get a ticket for having a loud *** muffler, since its got no cat or res either.. any suggestions on what i should get? or if i shouldn't even get a silencer :P

Besides You don't need no stinkin' muffler.
I just had a 2.5" pipe run from cat to bumper no resonator no muffler. actually too quiet for my tastes. Gotta figure out how to deepen the tone. back to throaty growl like it was before.

too quiet?! i think you gotta have your hearing checked...

back on topic, i have a magnaflow and it sounds really nice. mine originally have a silencer but the muffler dude was cool, so he just let me have one for free as for cops pulling you over, it's really up the the cop himself/herself. if you're worried about excessive noise, get a long resonator and have a muffler place install it. that should cut down the noise.

You want me to record it 4 u?
Just at what RPM and distance.
But it is too quiet.

just seems to be mad loud without a resonator and muffler to quiet down the exhaust...

nope it isn't
dunno why tho. Was hoping for a deeper tone and a bit more volume.
I think I'm gonna supertrap the tip and hopefully deepen the tone. Sounds too Ricey right now

Magnaflow Street series is good choice as long as you don't deviate further from a stock exhaust - nicest velvety low toned growl I've ever heard.

BUT, here's the Gotcha: IF you ever later decide to add a high performance Y-pipe (Cattman or Warpspeed), you'll have BIG noise problems with the Magnaflow Street or any 'straight through' muffler - even with a resonator. Even if you're deaf, you'll get a headache just from the resonance vibrating the fillings out of your teeth. Put your foot into in, and every cop for several miles around will hear you. Even driving like a grandmother may get you stopped.

If you want to allow for going to a Y-pipe later, you'll want the biggest resonator that will fit (22"-24" body length) and a different muffler. The Magnaflow XL 3 chamber series that might work. It took the biggest Flowmaster SUV series (for big block V8s) that would fit on my Y-pipe equipped Maxima plus an 18" resonator to get noise levels down to where I probably won't get stopped by the cops for normal driving. I'm still at risk of getting pulled over if I put my foot into it much at all.

Read about my exprience here:
Help! All new Exhaust, Magnaflow is Deafening!

It would be a shame to eliminate the potential to go the Y-pipe without also re-working your catback (expensive). The Y-pipe is one of the best bang-for-the buck bolt-ons for getting HP out of a Maxima. A compromise might be to use the Magnaflow Street series, but go for that 24" resonator to use with it. This would probably still give you good sound without the Y-pipe, and might make the Magnaflow barely tolerable with a Y-pipe if you really like it LOUD.
