What would you pay?

for a 1990 Maxima GXE with 175k miles and a transmission that needs to be rebuilt, but the car still runs fine to get around?

body in good condition, black exterior/interior fabric, no bose, no sunroof, good tires and rims in good condition, engine sounds good, AC, no cd player.

???????

whats the most you would pay?, if u were the seller, what is the least you would accept?

<$1000.00. The transmission is what is going to kill the price. With a working tranny, the price would be about $2000.00 or less. Right off the back, you are looking at $1500.00 or more for the tranny. Therefore, that would bring the total price to $2500.00 if you paid an even $1000.00. When I had my GXE's tranny redone, it cost me $1850.00 at AAMCO (my bad for going there).

At 175K miles, you still have to worry about other minor things such as window regulators, timing belt along with water pump (if not already done), possible injectors, etc. Really, I feel a fair price for that year and the described problem is around $500.00.

Any more takers on this?

darhaw, id your tranny still good right now? they did a good job? cuz i paid 1300 and had a 1 yr gaurantee...and they had to redo it twice until they put in a new transmission. a generic one that is heavy duty. it doesnt even downshift

did i pay too much? or was it a bargain?

i have a 92 GXE with the Option 4 package, the bose was f***ed completely, and i had to bypass the factory anti-theft to get it started the day after i bought it.

I paid $2500 for it. it has all the goodies on it, everything ran fine when i bought it with 120000 mi. and still seems good.

basketballer,

500 sounds good. 700 at most.

harrymay,

you did not pay too much, but you did not get a bargain. you weren't raped. but a bargain would have been like a thousand.

DARHAW is correct. The tranny is going to cost anywhere from $1300 on up to rebuild/replace. Even if you could get it for $500, you'd be looking at spending about $2K by the time you had the tranny re-built. Not to mention the other things that SHOULD be replaced if they haven't already. I personally wouldn't do it on a car that I didn't know the history on. My GXE is similar to yours, and I went ahead and rebuilt the tranny at 175K- but, the car had been in my family since new, and I had all the maintenance records, so I knew that the timing belt had been done, water pump, etc..so I knew what I was getting into. Just my .02

UPDATE

i ended up agreeing with $750 for the car. i will make the deal final and bring home the car tomorrow.

ps. i really wanted the car cuz its all black interior and exterior and the body was in exeptable condition much better than my 94 was. and i wanted to make sure to get the car cuz i have the other one at home with the engine rdy for it if the 175k means a lot to the current engine. transmission, i can drive without out fixing it for a while until i get enough money. and so really, i bought it cuz the exterior and interior, i wanted a a mxima not another kinf and i didnt want to wait to find another one that i liked better.

Im posting a new thread with some questions about this car

you did good. i knew the guy would want around 700. 50 bucks over that is negligible. you have a good looking one.

fix her up, man. you will get to know the drill.
