How do ya guys have your trunk set up?
#1
I'm almost done buying all the stuff I need in my
car for a pretty good audio system.
Now I'm planning out how I'm gonna set up everything
in my trunk (when I get the car back)
How do you guys have your systems set up?
Where are the subs/amps/crossovers mounted?
I was planning on mounting them against the back wall
of the trunk, but it's tilted bad and I don't want
anything to affect the cooling of my amps. I was thinking
of mounting a board vertically and attaching it to the
back wall but it seems like a waste of space.
Also, about the subs.... where do you guys have them?
I want something that looks kind of nice and lets me show
off my amps/crossovers/subs... I don't want a Q-Logic box
or something like that. I was thinking wheel well
but I don't want to lose my spare.... (too much bad
luck this year) Oh yeah, and I don't wanna lose any
sound quality...

i will have pics up of mine soon, but ill try to explain for now.i got my sub box, flush up against the back seats. i built the box so it would fit around that weight thing thats back there on the floor. the box sticks out to where the trunk starts to open up wider. It fills up that whole space in there nicly so it looks nice and clean. no gaps. then i got my amp rack built against the right side of the truck. it looks ok there, but not as nice as if you were to have the amp rack flat along the truck floor. i didnt want that because i didnt want to loose access to my spare and i didnt want to loose the truck space. my setup now still leaves tons of trunk space and looks pretty good. i still have enough room to bring all my ice hockey epuipment or my snowboarding equipment back there.

stereo
Yeah ive got my sub on a piece of wood, i screwed the wood to the back of the seats so the sub face wud come out into the car through the armrest. It works well, my amp is screwed to the left side wall right near the back of the seats.

There is an infinite number of possibilities. I built my box for 2 12's as seperate boxes, then for the bottom I took one piece of wood, the distance between the wheel wells, and joined the two boxes. There is about a 1 foot space between the two boxes where I added my battery and cap and distribution block. I then attached a couple of 1" by 1" peices of wook across the front so that I would have space to run wires under the amps and then mount the amps on the board facing to the trunk. Then build a wall to cover the boards and go around the amps. The subs fire up of course. Though, in my 87 max, the subs fired toward the back and it sounded much better! Of course that box was ported with Kenwoods in it.

pretty nice..
I was thinking of using plex but decided against it.
My trunk goes through a lot of crap every day.. when I
get back from school and throw my backpack into it,
and so forth. I was actually debating whether or not
to mount the amps on the bottom of the trunk though...
it looks real nice there. I bought a bunch of 3/4" MDF
and when I get my Max back from the shop I'm gonna go measure out some stuff.
Brandon- you ever have any problems with the single
box sliding around? I have a pair of 10's so they're
probably not gonna sit snug to either side as well..
Solutions? I was thinking either a whole lotta velcro
or maybe some brackets. Also, how hard does it hit
with one sub in the back?
Matt- from looking at the pix I see some airholes.
Cooling system? How is it working for ya? Also,
I noticed that you have a cover for the plex. I assume that you usually cover everything up?
and what kind of amps are those? Another thing.. do you
still have your spare stuffed under all that stuff?
Boy I'm excited now... I have so many other Max's to compete
with. I hope my finished system looks half as nice as this.
Thanks guys.

oops another thing...
What advantages/disadvantages are there with mounting
the subs in the different directions? I used to have a
truck box in my old G20 and the subs were pointed straight
up. Even though I cut a bigassed hole in my rear deck,
it wasn't enough... the low end bass sounded great, but
all the high-end stuff sucked so bad. Sounded distorted...
My buddy has a pair of my old JL's in his trunk, mounted on
either side of a bazooka tube. Looks like crap, but dang
it hits hard... kinda pisses me off because I practically
gave him those subs because they sucked so bad for me.
I know most people have it mounted towards the back
of the trunk. Looks the best, but are there any
disadvantages?
I was gonna mount them in the rear deck.. but noticed that
the trunk mech totally kills that idea. Oh well...
Even made some fiberglass boxes... grah!!!

bull- its not that long of a ground, it just goes to the back of the car, and is connected to a bolt that holds the tailight in, no alternater wine at all.
Yak- surprisingly enough, the box really doesnt slide that much, unless i take a corner extremely hard, where the tires are screeching. other then that the box manages to stay pretty much planted where it is, but now that you mentoined it, velcrow is not a bad idea at all! i was thinkin L' brackets, but thats just a PITA. and yea, for being one 12" its hits really nicely, clean but it carries, and is pretty much perfect for what i need.
matt- damn you , you just had to dwarf my little crap box didnt you?
good stuff though, i love your setup..

Yes, those are holes for cooling fans. I've got 2 fans on each side of the amp rack. I have no cooling problems at all, even in 110deg weather.

On top of the plexi, I made a wood cover and covered it in matching carpet. I've had the trunk completely full of stuff for the last 6 months, and no problems. (My stock Y pipe in a box, bucket of car wash stuff, 2 toolboxes, etc etc etc).. it just rides around back there on top of it, and no problems.

in this pic, you can see the cover being held up to show everything underneath.

Matt-whoa that's a lotta wiring you got under there..
did you do the install yourself or have a shop do it?
also, how much more raised up is the base of the trunk
from the amp rack? it looks like 1-2 inches to me but I can't really tell.
one more thing.. where does the air for the cooling fans
come from? is there a vent that leads to the trunk?
nice nice system, boy i have a lot of work to do

I did 99.9% of the install myself. I had Kaleb and Slickismax help me with a few things the night before IASCA Finals, but other than that, it was all done in my garage with "regular" hand tools.
yeah, it's a lot of wiring, but I have a lot of stuff installed too.![Smilie](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
the top of the amp rack is about 4-5" higher than the floor of the trunk. still leaves a decent amount of room to store stuff back there, but it does take out a pretty big chunk.
the top "deckk" just has holes on the sides that vent back into the air in the trunk. I didn't want to go under the car and cut apart the vents underneath the trunk, but I think it would be a good idea if someone wanted to do it that way too. jsut more alteration from stock than I want to do.
right now, everything i've doen with the system, I can turn the car back to 100% stock and you would never know it was there. if I do any more to the car, I'm gonna have to start cutting sheetmetal out and stuff like that. I might, I might not.

I took a look at those pics that you had. I recall you saying something about making some of those pods and selling them. Your car, being the same color, model and trim as mine, is very close to how I want mine. How in the world did you get your engine compartment so clean??? It looks like you used some kinda metal polish, and polished the entire engine bay. Definately looks like a show car and not a daily driver.
