Pictures of some mods I did...

whats up guys?

Well I did some things to the car in the past few days, and decided to wait until I could get some pictures before I would post about it so maybe more of you guys will reply .

First up...

Heres a shot of the gauges, they've kind of worked their way 'upward' more than normal. I made the card board holder while I was at school alittle over a month ago, I had a 2 hour block of time to kill so I made good use of it .

The other thing is that I wired up switches and LED's for my VTC's and VI, and they work. I still need to double check the LED's wiring because they seem to be acting kind of funny, but otherwise the switches work perfectly. The LED's are in that little area next to the Air/Fuel gauge, you can kind of see them in there. I used a red LED for the VTC's and the blue LED for the VI, there not on right now. The switches are down where the tranny switch would be for the cars with an Automatic transmission. Since I dont have a cover, I used cardboard and went over it with a sharpie. works for now so I cant complain.

oh yeah, forgive the crappy shift **** and boot, they are on the way out, I just need to find a nice aftermarket boot that will fit. I havent put too much effort into it.

Next up...

nothing much done yet, the valve cover looks dirty but its actually clean.
I did polish the breather tube that goes from the valve covers to the mid pipe, and I polished the tube that goes from the IACV to the intake manifold. I'll be doing more later on, but just wanted to show this for right now. I was worried how it would look and was thinking about painting everything black so it wouldnt attract attention, but this actually looks good.

oh, and these are waiting to go on the max, but I need to find wheels that will clear them, which is going to take awhile because I am broke.

mmm not a big fan of guages, but if you paint the faceplate black it may look better. Nice clean engine bay.

oh yeah, I did a run threw 2nd gear with the VTC's grounded, and a run with the VTC's being normal (and they werent clicking either). Lets just say on the 2nd run (not grounded) I saw the needle hit 6800rpms or so right as I shifted, the engine reminded me of my old one in the 5000-redline area, it just made a slightly different noise that reminded me of my old car. Also by the time I got to the end of the on ramp, I was letting off the gas after being in 3rd gear abit, I had hit 85mph already. It seemed to have abit more pull in the top end on 2nd and part of 3rd gear. I'm going to experiment more though, probably break out the G-tech and do a few runs and average them to see if it notices any thing different.

an appreciation for Mr. Gone

mr. gone,

you are always cool and informative and casual and innovative. i like your style and what you offer this org.

you make me want a VE max. i have 2 VG's. both are 90SE 5spds -go figure.

because i have never had to deal with VTC's, fill me in on the skinny: what is the general deal with those? they tick? they affect performance when they do what? you have an led wired to them for when they do what? pardon my newbie-esque VTC ignorance.

the VG has a variable intake valve only. no VTCs. is much simpler and, egads, more reliable?

Radio started smoking (ie pretty much on fire with out the flames) on me when I was hooking it up. It came with the car. sucks but oh well. I need to get another because without the radio I rely on the engine to keep me entertained and thats not good

I cant quite remember your diagram. I'll draw mine up. I did not use a relay though.

Bonzelite-
Thanks! The way I see it you have to be cool and casual on here, we all have different experience levels, and with out this site I wouldnt know half the stuff I do. Plus its a great way to make friends (or e-Friends hehe).

VTC's Valve Timing Control. They go 'bad' because the springs stop putting pressure on a plate (I still need to take one apart to really understand it). Basically when the springs cant hold enough pressure the VTC's make a ticking noise, which is more of a clacking/knocking noise if you ask me. When you ground them you loose some high end power, specifically above 4600rpm, but they stop clacking away. The LED was going to be to tell me when they are on/off just so I could get a feel, but I'm probably going to take it out when I get it working because it will get annoying. The switch is basically just so I can control it from in the car. I've found that mine only clack some times, so the switch will be handy.

The VI switch is probably pretty worthless too, but I thought it would be fun to see what it does.

nice FSTB

what did you use to polish up the breather pipe

i used a fine grit sandpaper on mine and sanded it down, cleaned it and used this generic metal polish i had laying around. Mine looks like a "brushed aluminum" type color, not chromey

please continue

so, as i know little about VTCs, the basic idea is: the VTCs are enabled electroncially/mechanically at a certain rpm -like a variable intake valve. so your led tells you when the computer has enabled the vtc's? if so, why do you need to know? also, VTC's are not already grounded? you must mod them to ground them?

before i ask more uninformed questions, perhaps shed more light on the above ones.

shouldn't have sanded.

I just pulled mine off and went to town on my buffing wheel. took me about 15 minutes and it looked just like his. but now it's dull and ugly (8 months later).. just need to hit it with some wax again to shine it up.

I used some "fine" sand paper, then I hit it with 600 grit, then 2000 grit tried some steel wool, didnt really work well. Next time I use matts method

so what happened to the VE30DE-R?

I like the gauge setup. I may do something like that when I start collecting some gauges. Nice work.

After driving your car to work and back, that must have been VERY SCARY! How was the car able to go straight with all the vibration???

...and if those pics are pretty new, I see that you didn't get my old shift **** put on.

lol, I guess I'm just used to it. Soon it will be over with though. I'm going to replace the control arm bushings, ball joints and wheel bearings when I do the suspension work. I think they have gotten worse though. I dont think its the axles because I did the whole turn the wheel to its lock and drive in circles to listen/feel for clunks or other wierd noises and I didnt hear any.

stupid shift ****... I think I'm going to be breaking out the hack saw soon.

I was thinking of doing that just to get mine out of the way of my monitor's retracting from the console. Maybe an inch or two...

I hacksawed my shifter about 2" and put a sparco **** on it. MUCH shorter throw. It's just about perfect where it is.

I laugh at the appearance of your steering wheel.
And your wheels.
And your Gauge panel.
And your LED's.
And your lack of Stereo.
And your mustang.
Especially the Mustang.

That has to be the cleanest engine bay i've ever seen. At least when it comes to VEs. How the hell did you get the intake manifold so clean? Looks really good i know it took some time.

Actually thats the funny part, the engine was already pretty dang clean when I bought it. I kind of got the intake manifold abit dirty when I did my tranny swap and just haven't cleaned it yet. I'll probably throw on my Auto Intake Manifold and polish my 5spd one (not only the outside of it either ).

Keelan- Do you laugh at my coils?

Does anyone know the Model Number for the Grant Steering wheel adapter for our cars? If I can find one I'll probably buy it and use my Mustang's steering wheel until I can get a 4spoke one. (my mustangs steering wheel is a Grant 719).

Yep. I was thinking about shortening the overall length of the shifter so my in-dash monitor will clear it. Right now, I have to put my car in D if I want the screen to come out or retract.

Will the Momo adapter work with a Grant Wheel?
