problem with A/C UNIT please help.

I recently bought an 89' maxima and it runs very well. My only problem is that the A/C head unit doesn't seem to work. Air blows out of the front vents but not the floor or from the defrost. The buttons on the A/C unit have no effect on changing the air direction. the only thing that seems to work on the unit is the lever that makes the air blow softer or harder.

What do you guys think the problem could be?
-Do i need a new head unit?
-Could it be vacuum hoses?

I would really apprieciate any help. Thanks alot.

-Chris

the a/c heater head unit wont direct the air to the defrost or the floor at all. Whether on all the way cold or hot. the only thing the a/c heater head unit will do is blow the air on softer or harder.

does this help anymore?

thanks again.

i don't know much of anything about Max's or how their systems are set up yet, but I know on other cars that where the air goes is controlled by vacuum lines... so most likely, if it's the same on Nissans, a vac line or two popped off the back of the Climate Control unit somewhere...
