Glow Gauges

Hey all...

Was surfing eBay last night and found these... What do you think? Too cheap to work correctly? Has anyone ever dealt with this guy?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=43952

Thanks,
Bill

Those are just overlays, so you don't actually modify the movement. The only quality issue is the backlight materials, but I haven't heard any complaints. good luck

Nice, thanks guys. I'm gonna order them right now. Taking the dash apart to do them isn't many more steps after doing a Head Unit install right? I know I saw a write-up on here somewhere...does anyone have the link?

I figure for $20 they can't be too big of a waste...

i also have dealt with procarparts and i had a good experience with them.

i have a writeup part way down the page that says how to get the guage cluster out. http://www-new.nissanx.com/f0rums/th...d=37&styleid=2

since you have a 92 it might be a little different.

Come see my first attempt with indiglo

I had a good experience with procarparts
Check out my dash at

http://maxima.cardomain.com/memberpage/449511

Strangely enough, they do not give instructions in the box....
I called and they emailed them to me.
I really dig it!

I think he means drilling a small hole or two in the cluster top to run the wires from the faces back out from the cluster to the gauge's power inverter...you'll see once you get them in there

When I installed mine my cluster didn't close correctly. You need to drill holes around each gauge to match the OEM gauges. The bezel has pins that insert into the guages. If you don't make these hole the cluster won't lock into place.

I just put the same ones (from procarparts.com) into my '92 GXE with '91 SE gauge. It looks great. As for drilling holes for the wires, there already was a square hole on the right side of the back (looking at it from the back), through which I ran the wires. I used scotch double sided tape to tape the gauges to the stock faces. I would post the pictures but don't know how to include them. Anyone want to tell me how I can include pictures on postings?

Since nobody else has mentioned it, I think that it's worth noting that the VG's have the speedometer that goes to 125, and VE's ave the speedometer that goes to 145.

Those gauges will be correct for a 89-91 SE, & 89-94 GXE.

Couldn't figure out how to post pics here.

http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/462609

I installed them, but had to remove the fuel gauge needle. The Speedometer needle was also broken (dang ebay!), so I pulled the speedometer off my GXE gauge and dremmeled and crazy glued a new needle...

I didn't need to drill for holes because the maxima dash has a hole in the back.

How are they working? Are they smooth? Did the cluster snap back together?

DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for any personal injury or property damage that may occur. Use the instructions at your own risk.

o Take a flat screwdriver and pry up on the trim around the shifter (this step isn't necessary though, but makes it easier to pull the radio panel off.
o Remove the ashtray.
o Remove TWO screws at the bottom of the radio trim. One under where ashtray used to be (at the right side that is), and other on the left side of the trim.
o pull at the bottom of the radio trim near the ashtray opening, work up to release clips near the AC controls. I am not sure if the manual AC has them, but my auto climate control had a "thermometer" connected to the panel.
o unclip the hazard light harness, pull up on the panel, and unclip the auto tranny shift pattern switch harness. unclip the cigarette lighter light, and use flat screwdriver to un-clip the DC power harness to the lighter.
o Remove FOUR screws under the long trim that goes across the steering column (with the defroster, dimness, mirror buttons). Swing up on the trim, unclip the four wiring harness. Put steering wheel to lowest position and then remove the trim.
o Remove the screws that are holding the cluster trim (that goes around the clock too, and has the front vents built in to them). There are couple along the bottom, and then few that need to be removed at the top (inside the cluster opening).
o pull out on the trim and then once it is slightly removed, un-clip the clock harness.
o Remove the SIX screws that are on the underside of the steering column (use a magnestic screwdriver, because they can easily fall in behind the kick panel). This isn't necessary, because you can squeeze the dash trim, but sometimes it will scratch the steering column cover if you do not remove it. Once the column screws are removed, pry out the black ring around the keyhole (not the lighted ring). Pry between the upper and lower covers and then remove them (I think the lower is attached by wires, so only upper will freely come out. Leave the lower cover in place.
o Keep steering wheel in low position and then pull out on the dash trim.
o Remove FOUR screws (two upper two lower) on the speedometer cluster.
o pull out the cluster and then un-clip the three harness (there are TWO clips per ONE harness. one on either side, unlike the others previous (hazard, etc), where they only had one clip to depress to remove the harness).

Dash overlay install:

o Use a screwdriver and un-clip the clear plastic retainers along top and bottom.
o Pull out the cover.
o use screwdriver to un-clip the black retainers to remove the black bezel.
o DO NOT REMOVE NEEDLES. I would suggest you be very careful because 10 year old cluster will have very sensitive meters and you wouldn't want to have them stick or not work once you put the overlays on.
o bend the overlay slightly and then slide it up the needle and clear the post of the needle and the needle rest. Bend up on the overlay and then place some double-stick tape (Scotch Poster tape #109 Staples) to secure the overlay.
o You might have to put some holes in the overlay edges if they do not line up (mine did).
o I unscrewed the speedometer from the rear (four screws), and ran the overlay wiring under it and out the little hole behind the temp gauge.
o For the temp gauge, I think the only way is to remove one of the needles (someone let me know if it can be done otherwise). I removed the gas gauge with long nosed pliers. Note the position of the needle before you remove it.
Replace needle and then press down on it.
o leave the bulbs in, because you need them to illuminate the needles.
o put the cluster back together, and install on the car.

As for wiring the overlays, it's upto you. You can either tap it off the turn signal stalk, where the headlamp power is (stalk should be exposed if you removed the column cover before). This will turn on the overlay with the headlights.
Other way is to use a fuse tap from radioshack and tap it off something that gets power when ignition is on (i.e. radio). This method will make the overlay light up whenever the key is turned, kinda like those electruluminescent dashes of infiniti. I wonder if one can put limo tint on the cluster plastic and if it will work like the infiniti (where everything iside cluster is dark and invisible, until the backlighting turns on...).
