New Rims, center cap pops off.

Hi,
I just got my new 17" rims and when I seat them in place the axel dust cover pops the center caps off. Can I remove the dust cover, or should I take a hammer and bang it in until I can put the center cap on the rim? How does the dust cover come off? Does it screw off?

Cheers,
Matthew

The dust cover should just pry off with a screwdriver or something. Yes, you could bash it in a little (without removing it), but check first and see if that's enough to let the center caps fit. Be careful not to cave them in too much of course...

there's a lot of room under the dust cap, don't worry. you can't just remove it (dirt in wheel bearings = BAD), but you can replace it with another one.

I bought some from the local parts store in their "HELP!" section. they were a tad larger than what fits our car, so I just took a dremel and cut a few grooves in it so the thing sould smash down a bit and fit into the hub. then I coated that part in RTV silicon so it won't leak, and hammered them on. wheels fit just fine and no dust in the bearings!
