Real quick question...

I know this has prolly been beaten to death but here goes...

Does the max sound decent w/o it's muffler? I've been contemplating it but i'd have to saw/grind it off. If it sucked, i'd have to have it welded back on... could you guys save me the trouble?

thanks.

i guess the realm of straight piping/no exhaust is reserved for those with 8 or more cylinders...

isn't it worse if ya pull the resonator instead of the muffler?

the reason i'm asking is simply because I had to check my o2 sensor. I had the car running with it out and it sounded sorta mean at idle... didn't rev it up and risk blowing gasses all over my helpers face...

I was in a VG on Saturday night when the exhaust blew apart after the Y-Pipe.

It wasnt deafening loud, but it certianly was too loud for the street. Probably ~3x louder than Jeff's car. It doesnt really have a ricey tone, but the volume would definetly cause some problems. I have a feeling if it was resonated and went all the way back to the end of the car with out a muffler it would be alot, i mean ALOT quieted. If your bored one day unbolt the cat (or maybe the B-pipe) and start up the car.

Don't do it.

I was with littlepiggie with both:
a) No exhaust behind the Y.
b) Resonator, Catback, but no muffler.

Neither of these will be fun / legal for street use.

Okay, well it was fun, but only until my ears started to bleed.

I've got a VE with no resonator no muffler 2.5" muffler shop special cat back. And it sounds fine to me. Y-pipe and cat are still stock though

hermmm is the VE that much more tolerable or are you just deaf? I couldn't find my hacksaw so it didn't happen today. If i'm going to, it'll be *right* before the muffler.

my setup is a hacked stock ypipe to 2.5" pipe (flex back) with 1 resonator and a 2k1AE muffler. i think it sounds great, but not quite loud enough so i'll probably have the resonator taken out eventually.
no cat
i also have an exhaust leak at the flange where the manifold meets the Y for the rear bank, its just not bolted completely together (i got excited when my motor was hooked up and never finished tightening).
i am defiantely finished with loud exhaust, i can actually creep around and not draw any attention to myself, its great but still thunderous when i'm revving it out.

I also keep the alpine at about 8 or higher. But that little extra extension will make a world of difference. as will the material used to make the pipe.

BTW anyone have a pic of the aftermarket Y - pipe for the VE?

ok ive had previous experience with htis kind of stuff, my buddy has a tacoma v6 and he tried to dump the exhaust (it is lifted) and it sounded terrible, he also has a lifted chevy with a 454 big block dumped and it sounds great, there was a guy at my old high school with an old z car that had no exhaust and that also sounded terrible (i believe that had a vg in it too) also there is a guy who live two streets over with a dumped out protege and it sound like shat, but better than a v6.

seriously dont degrade the car to ricer ways.

Anton, why do you need a pic of a VE Y-pipe if you have a VG? WSP should have some on their site. Also RedMax92SE has some on the last page of his cardomain.

make sure to have your ear plugs on when you start up your car after you cut off the muffler, that sould will resonate all through your car.

I drove my car with my flex pipe broken in two pieces for months, every day it got louder and louder and my gas mileage got lower and lower. My WSP setup is deep and controlled not raspy and hissing like before.

why all ya'll hate that wonderful sound?!?! It's barely noticeable outside the car! Granted, it's got the resonating deep tone between 1500-2500 rpm but after that, i'll hear the intake more than the exhaust. I've most likely lost some low-end but it revs cleaner, faster, and smoother than before (my muffler weighed a ton++)! Can't wait for the y-pipe and everything else!

If anyone else is doing this, it doesn't make it "ricey" at all.

(btw, all i did was hack the muffler off. nothing else was touched.)

Well your car is faster now, because it's lighter.

Enjoy.

First you need a real old fashioned muscle car to have a real exhaust
