For all of those whe have replaced BOSE
I know i should have searched but its been disabled. After i change the HU, can i just switch to a different 4" speaker in the bose pod?
|
Nope, The pods use a 3 bolt mount versus a 4 bolt more common mount.
James sells 6.5" pods |
I got 2 4"s for my fronts, the factory are screwed in with 3 screws, my new pioneers have 4 holes, i just bent the hole things and left one and screwed that, fits in there fine, no problems yet...no need to buy pods
|
Yeah, you can just put new 4"s in there... I did just about the same thing as DMad with my 4" Pios...
However, I would say to upgrade to 6.5s and either buy the pods from James or make your own. |
I just did this whole replacement. What a biatch it was. I ended up running entire new speaker wires from both front doors, wasn't getting a signal and I used james pods with alpine 6.5"s in there. It sounds sweet though.

converter
I just replaced the head unit with a sony i got from best buy. I kept the bose speakers just wired them through a level converter that I bought at walmart for 15 bucks. Changed over to a universal adapter (also purchased at walmart for about 2 bucks made specifically for bose). Works great. Sounds great. Costs little.

For temporary (see low on funds) solutions, put 4" speakers in the bose pods or get an adapter so you can have a good HU. However, long term you really should be thinking ahead to 6.5" speakers and making/buying pods.
My car had the stock Bose amps/speakers with an Alpine HU and a Peripheral bose adapter (look at cardomain.com, they are very nice and work perfectly). Over time, the amps and speakers malfunctioned. Bose stuff does not work well with non-Bose equipment. It worked great for about two years. After that, things went downhill. I drove around for several months listening to AM radio on the one (blown) speaker that produced sound. This is just my advice and I know everyone doesn't have hundreds of dollars to throw at their stereos. Neither did I. Slowly I bought bits and pieces for my stereo until I could finally rid myself of everthing that says "Bose" except the grills. I had the pods from James before I could afford the speakers to go in them. I also have a subwoofer purchased from a pawn shop and an amp that I bought in 1997. Respectable stereos can be had cheap if you are patient and thrifty. my $.02 |
WANT GOOD SOUND NOW!!!! (cheaply) BTW Red92MaxSE, can I use your $0.02 to add to mine so I can be that much closer to getting a decent sound out of my stereo??? :grinno:

http://www.mr2sc.com/MaximaSE/serv02.htm While I don't cover fabbing up door enclosures or installing aftermarket speakers in the front Bose pods, I do show how to adapt the factory wiring to use a aftermarket head unit with either Bose or non-Bose speakers. This is basically bypassing the separate Bose amplifier located at each speaker. This means you don't need to bother with a rinky-dink "level matching" device. It also means you are free to later add any amps you want to at any point in the wiring. http://www.mr2sc.com/MaximaSE/Stereo...0connecter.jpg http://www.mr2sc.com/MaximaSE/Stereo...oseSpeaker.jpg |

you can hack the crap out of the stock bose pods.... but really just buy James pods. With my old black maxima I built my own (didnt know James made them). You seriously can't beat James pods for price and quality, and it will save you alot of time (assuming you have all the proper tools in the first place)
