I am contemplating buyiny a 93 SE 5sp. I was informed by the owner that there is this VT failure common to all SE's made between 92-94. I was told that this did not affect performance and the only problem with this was that it caused an off and on rattling sound. I need to know the full effects of this condition and if it can deteriorate the engine. I know next to nothing about cars but the car looks to be in good physical shape. It has 115,00 miles. If anyone can tell what to look out for or what to ask it will be most appreciated. I dont have an unlimited cash supply and dont want to make an investment that will drain my pockets in repairs down the line.

Thanks for any help I can get.

Do a search on "vtc ground" in this forum - use the little search text up in the top right corner. There's a ton of info out there.

Yes, use the search bar at the top..

But here is some brief info:

VTCs are very common on 92-94 SE models which have the 190 hp VE engine (compared to only 160 on regular GXE Maximas with the VG engine )
VTC failure doesn't really damage your car, or engine, but it will cause some horsepower loss.. They make a ticking sound on start up of the car, and they cost a lot to fix (somewhere over a 1,000$) They can be grounded, and people have done that..

Search, there is more info
