A hint for quickly learning how healthy your car is.

It's been a while since I've been on here. I haven't posted much since I posted about my GPS/MP3/Divx setup. Since then I pretty much fried all the parts and had to repurchase about the whole system. The good news is it is up and running again and 100 percent functional now.

This get's me to the purpose of this post. Since my system was fried I had no music to listen to and I drove for several weeks without anything to listen to but the car. I've heard stuff that I've never heard before, things that I need to investigate a little for maintenance.

So anyway ways, just a hint that sometime, try turning off your sound system for about a week. You can learn a lot with your ears and perhaps be able to head off anything major.

NO music for a week, are you insane. I feel like I am wasting my car stereo if I have it off for more than a minute.

Yeah, me too. Except sometimes I just ignore the stereo and dont' really pay attention to the music. If all I have is the radio to listen to, sometimes I just turn it most of the way down, or off even, so I can just hear the road and whats going on outside. Sometimes that's more entertaining than what is going on the radio.

my bov actually isn't too loud. its actually a 1st gen dsm recirculation valve so you can just hear a gush of air instead of the normal whistle. i maybe upgrade sometime but this should be good for now.

Ummm, if you're hearing the turbo while driving down the highway, you've got a problem... you shouldn'e be boosting unless you're pretty onto the gas pedal..
should be pulling 10-12in vacuum while cruising down the highway.

yeah, i am. its when i step on it. i can also hear it if i just lightly get on the gas while on the highway. it spools pretty quick while moving, even at 2000 rpm.

if i was going for sound i think i'd go for a turbo xs rfl bov. i heard one on a wrx with stock boost and that sucker was loud. (although stock boost on a wrx is around 14 psi so that would make it pretty loud in the first place.)

i do agree with the original post, you can hear a lot of stuff your engine is doing by listening and find the problem pretty quickly from it... except for vacuum leaks. those bastards are impossible to find but easy to hear.

Off topic, but in my MR2 SC (which I rarely drive on the street anymore) I removed the stereo. Even when it was my daily driver and it had a great stereo in it, I would drive 1100 miles every other weekend listening only to the glorious music of the 4AGZE engine nestled only inches from the back of my head. Such SWEET music! Nothing like 200+ rwhp from a 1.6L DOHC engine revving to 7500 rpm to entertain you!

I do miss driving that car on the road sometimes.... It just makes overly aggressive driving WAY to easy though!

Pretty much what I do, too. My exhaust is a bit louder than normal, so I just crank the music up to just under "my-ears-are-bleeding" level and let the tunes take me to a better place...

...a place where everyone drives a 3rd Gen 5sp VE with 20k miles...
...a place where the speed limit signs have question marks instead of numbers...
...a place where gas is 50 cents/gallon...
